Below is a Life Magazine picture showing (what I think is) a CJ-3B jeep. It is in service with the US Navy at Da Nang Air Base, South Vietnam. No date given. Note the regular road tread tyres and bumperettes. Is it fitted with front free wheeling hubs? ![]() (click for a large size image) |

I'd say it's definitely a 3B as many were used in the Vietnam War, not only by US personnel, but also by the South Vietnamese. It does appear to have some brand of lockout hubs attached. Larry S. |

Ramblin What paint are you using for your USN 3B? I would like to restore mine to navy grey also but not sure where and what to use. Anyone else have suggestions? Also as I am on east coast rust zone what is a good inhibitor? CHEERS Lawrence |

I used Rust Oleum smoke gray. It's quite durable and I liked the price. A quart cost me $7.00 and you can get it anywhere. I did my Bantam trailer the same color a few months later, didn't have to worry about matching the color. If i need touch ups It's always available at the right price.

I have not gotten that far yet.But the actual Navy color seems to have a blue tint to it.Not really a true gray.I have been told the official color was called Non specular blue-gray.This is the best website for color and markings I have found.Even a cool Seabees Jeep trailer. http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Jeep_Man/simon.htm |

Not quite. According to the US Naval historical center web page "Painting of U. S. Navy Vehicles": "The basic color for all United States Navy transportation vehicles shall be medium gray No. 123". Hope this helps, Hanno |

The military vehicle sites have plenty vehicle paints to choose from. One is http://www.rapcoparts.com/ Look under paints and they are showing a gloss navy paint and a lusterless. I dont know how "accurate" they may be. Tom |

The artical you have on the main page with this picture on it id's the jeeps in front of the cj3b as mutts, they are not mutts, the m151 is a little larger than the cj3b. The rigs in front are m422's also know as the mighty mite. |

Still looked good. Referencing a post on that thread, the railroad maintenance trucks that travel on the tracks are called Hi-Rails or High Rails. My son drives one. Ed |

Speaking of the Mity Mite used by the US Marine Corp, our newsletter editor and Bluebonnet Military Motor Pool (www.bmmp.org) member Jim Sanders, (a former Marine in the Vietnam war) has one that has already won him several trophies in local auto shows in the short time he's owned it. And now, after veiwing it up close and personal, another member has the wants for one. Even though the Mites weren't manufactured for very long, they were (then, and still are now) very unique 4X4's due to their small size that enabled them to get into tight places. Additionally, they are very easy to haul on two wheeled trailers due to their lighter weight. Larry S. |
