I was reading front end alignment advice from Dr.Vern @ Vervco.com about the Ross steering gear box. The horizontal sector shaft & the steering gear arm have marks on them to properly align them for assembly. He says when these marks are aligned & the forward arm of the bellcrank is pointing straight ahead, the Ross steering gear box should be at the center of travel. This is here the steering gear should be when the toe-in for each wheel is set. On my 55 3B the origional horizontal sector shaft & the steering gear arm have the marks. The replacement sector shaft & the steering gear arm don't. Any one else run into this before?? Some experienced advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jax |

Jax, Don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but a friend and I just finished today installing a rebuilt steering box in a '44 Willys MB. Neither the splined shaft of the gear box nor the pitman arm had alignment marks on them. I've found this before on repro parts and have also found the easiest way to re-align the system is to turn the steering wheel all the way to lock in one direction (either direction will do); while the front tires are off the ground, turn them all the way in the same direction and insert the ball of the pitman arm back into the hole of the drag link and tighten the set screw accordingly. This procedure should put everything back in correct alignment, (same # of turns lock to lock). Larry S. |
