I am replacing both rear spring shackle brackets on my 58 civilian 3B. I ground off the heads of the 2 rivets and ground down the weld that also holds each to the frame. (Am I correct these were both riveted and welded to the frame?) They were both heavily rusted to the point that almost half of the bracket was gone towards the bottom rear of each bracket, though the rest of the frame was just fine. I was planning to re-attach 2 new rear spring shackle brackets. Instead of rivets, thought I would use 2 new Grade 8 fine thread bolts (with lock washers and locktite), and then add weld along each side of the bracket to the frame - about 1 inch along each end and on both sides (not one long bead on each side). Any thoughts about this method to re-attach the new brackets? John J |

John , Yes, they are riveted and welded. Most CJ-3B's used the "U" type threaded shackles Some frames in 1958 used the more conventional "H" type shackles. More specifically these are the "silent bloc" shackles. You might consider using grade 5 bolts and welding the nut in place. |

Mine where tack welded and rivited to the frame. I used Grade 8 Stainless bolts to put them back on. Have not had any issues. |

i have a question about shackles, i bought new ones on ebay and replace the old one . but on the right side in the back i always have to rethight it ,it is unscrewing by itself after a couples of hundred miles. is there a reason .i think that i have put the right one .because on the kit they were some with left thread.? |

Yes some are right handed and some are left handed tread. I think you are correct in your assumption. |

My 58 has the "silent block" type of shackles, not the "u" type. I appreciate the response on my planned replacement of the shackle mounts at the rear. On another topic, I noticed the steering wheel didn't seem to be mounted quite right. I when I pulled the wheel off (I wiggled it along with upward pressure and it came right off), I found where the PO must have cut the original steering wheel off. Unfortunately, they cut 90% of the steering shaft. I'm glad I never went out on the highway (or in the woods) with it like this. It was ready to break off. The PO moved the Jeep from NJ to GA about two years ago. When they loaded it in the U-haul and packed boxes around it, they bent the original steering wheel to make room for more boxed (actually they folded it in half and then bought a replacement wheel when they got to GA). Apparently, they had trouble getting the bent wheel off and went at it with a hacksaw. I've found several other "sins" that I have since corrected. John J |
