Official CJ-3B Seat Survey oldtime () - 14 Jun, 04:26 PM As many of you are aware the early seat properly termed "1/3 type seat" was changed to the "bucket type". The "bucket type" seat had more padding; also the drivers front left seat leg was positioned onto the top of the quarter panel. There appears to be no exact date for this change. General observation reveals that the 1960 and prior jeeps were equipped with the "1/3 type" while the 1961 jeeps were equipped with the "bucket type" seats. Some 1959 jeeps may also have the later "bucket type" seats. So if you have a 1959,1960 or 1961 please indicate the following. 1 ) "1/3 type" seat or "bucket type" seat. 2 ) Indicate year of CJ-3B and serial plate number -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Responses: Bob east TX () - 15 Jun, 07:28 AM bucket 5734861495 chris,..MD () - 15 Jun, 09:45 AM Bucket type ...I have a set of both types here in my garage. My '53 came to me with early Mustang bucket seats mounted to original seat frames that had been cut off at the rear bend. I might ad that they were very comfy and having both seats tip forward with a hardtop is quite handy to access the rear. Now I have the seats from my '56 Cj in it similar to the 1/3 type seats. |

B3ac0n, Your serial number seems atypical being one digit short. It also appears it should be a 1962 vintage according to our surviving serial number list: http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/SerialNos/...lNosEngine.html The bucket style seat is normal for either year. Hogboy, Your serial number seems to indicate a late built 1961 with correct seats installed. |

ups i typed wrong. the real serial is 5734886767 the plate on the dash is from the swiss army and says 1961 but the paper work said 62. i just guessed that the swiss army had it in stock one year before using it. but it could as well be a 62?

B3ac0n, Your serial number indicates..... early 1962 model year. Yours was likely built in August or September of 1961. That is when U.S. production changes over to the next model year. Seperate build date tags were not issued until the late 1960's. Even though it was built in late 1961 it is correctly referred to as an early 1962. Refer to the surviving serial numbers list. |
