Randy, Correct, and for the record, Willys mfg'd automobiles way back before Bantam and the Army Ord. Dept. even had an inkling regarding 4X4 reconnisance vehicles. Willys produced a large number of two door coupes in the mid and late 40's that in the 50's became very popular with drag racers. If memory serves me correctly, the car in the photo you've posted was badged also as a Henry J, which was distributed through Sears, Roebuck and Co. stores, (could have been badged as an Allstate, but I think it was the HJ; Sears also sold Cushman motor scooters badged under the Allstate brand name). The autos were mfg'd. and sold, for a short time only. As far as I know, the flat head engines and tranny's were the same as those used in the flat fender civilian jeeps before the 3B's were introduced. Perhaps Ken, Don and jyotin (or anyone else with the knowledge) can add some perspective to these old cars, and maybe even some of the older and original one's built by Willys. Larry S. |

Willys-Knight 1914-1933,Willys-Overland 1934-1954.1954 Henry J. Kaiser purchased Willys.Last year of production for Willys cars was 1955.The car in the pic is most likely a 52-55 Aero,Aero Ace or Lark. They had an L-head six cylinder, displacement was 161.1 CI.Bore and stroke 3:13x3:50 inches.Comp ratio,7.6-1,brake HP 90 at 4200 RPM.Top speed of 82.6 mph and had a fuel economy of 24.9 mpg.A few cars were also fitted with the Kaiser Manhatten engine which had a Paxton super charger. And gave the car 140hp.1933-1942 Willys cars are some of the best looking cars ever built. And were and still are popular Gasser or drag cars. |

Eddie, Thanks for refreshing my old memory (it's gett'n worse by the day). I was hoping that someone with more info on the old Willys cars would jump in to enlighten Randy more than I could, and I'm now more knowledgeable myself knowing the 50's cars had the 6 cylinder engines in them and not the four bangers. Were the three on the tree tranny's the same as the jeeps as I'd thought, or different? I can still see one of the cars on display at a Sears Roebuck store auto center located over on Harrisburg Blvd. at Wayside in Houston, where I made many a trip with my dad back in the 50's. I remember quite a few old Willys coupes at the drag strip just south of us at Dickinson, TX. The track was owned by the Gay family and the 83 (plus) year old mother still runs a Pontiac/GMC dealership on the same property, (her other son who was running the dealership passed away a couple of years back. I was performing the annual fire inspections of the dealership before retiring and was lucky enough to meeet the lady and discuss some old drag racing days with her. She has a remarkable memory regarding those times). You may recall one of her her sons, Don Gay (not the bull rider), a serious drag racer from thge 70's and 80's. There used to be some big name dragsters and owners show up at the strip, including Don Gartlits to name just one that I can think of at the moment. Hey, it's really great having such knowledgeable folks on these forums and I for one appreciate each and every one of 'em. Have a great weekend (rest of it anyway). Larry S. |

Here's some interesting info on engines used by Willys. http://www.public.asu.edu/~grover/willys/engines.html http://mightymo.org/Willys%20History.htm I would like to stress that the I-161 engines were not just like the I-134's with a couple cylinders added on. The Willys Lightening L-161 and the Hurricane F-161 had a much shorter stroke than that of the 4 cylinder "Jeep" engines. I imajine the F-161 head design was an improvement that was carried over to the car line from military field testing of the F-134 Hurricane. |

They used a 3 speed manual,3 speed manual with overdrive and a 4 speed Hydramatic. And they did install 4 bangers in the Aeros that were exported overseas. |
