I would like to paint my 1954 3B with a new color, but have never attempted this before. While I am familiar with house paints, I don't know how car paints work, or even what would be a reasonable cost to have someone do it for me. My goal is to help seal the body from the salt air, and to give it a new look. I have recently gotten a quote of $2,500 for painting it, from a professional shop, but that's a lot more money that I had expected. Considering they were quoting on taking out any dings (there aren't any to speak of), buffing out any rust (there is some, but mostly in the wheel wells), and then prime & paint, does that seem like lot of money? I'm just looking for a sanity check at this point before I start calling around for other quotes. Thanks, |

We use to have Earl Shib's ?SP around here that would paint a Jeep for $500. Last year I was checking and found a MACCO paint and body who would have done it for $1500 $2,500.00 is pretty reasonable for a good job. |

Are you looking for a show room no drips or runs like it came from the show room ,, Well there might have been a few drips & runs even then,, Or do you wantsomething nice looking & Hard as nails when it comes to Salt & snow,, Im in MD mtns lots of salt & snow & ice mostly so they use a lot of salt,, I recomend RUSTO-LEUM heavy rust primer after you've wire brushed all the lose rust ,, Its hard to stop rust but a oil base paint will slow it down,, RUST0-LEUM is a very good oil base paint & can be sprayed with a cheap sprayer from Harber Freight for under a 100 bucks ,, & RUSTO-LEUM has a bunch of colors ,, plus touch-up is easy as they make rattle cans to go along with the Quarst of the paint,, There Forest green is real close to the dark green that was offered for the stock 3Bs ,, Thats what In painting mine ,, You can make it darker or lighter if you add there white or black to a color..Then you make touch ups harder to get right unless you save some of your base paint,, I just bought a Daily driver that the PO had rolled Hurculiner on it ,, That stuff is hard as nails as its for the bed of trucks .. It was very dull black so I rolled & brushed forest green on top of the rusty primer of RUSTO-LEUM to give the color something to hold to,,& I think it looks good.. from this ![]() to this ![]() And if you spary it look for a Quality paint conditioner that makes oil based paints work better & last longer,, I used a product called PENETROL got at the hardware store that I boght my RUSTO-LEUM paint ,,Use this as a thiner,,, |

I started looking around paint shops since I am getting close to that part of the re-assembly for my 58 3B. I have a new body that came from Willys Overland in Toledo. I am mocking up the body now to be sure everything fits - so far, so good. I was planning to bring the tub, front fenders, hood, grille and rear gate to have them painted as parts, not on the frame. I wanted to have all sides painted the same color. The first quote I got was about $800 to shoot it with little or no other body work being needed. That didn't seem too bad, but then they upped it to $1,900, maybe as much as $2,200. That seems like a lot. Again, I don't need much prep since the body is new. Nothing to straighten, no rust to cut out and replace and they'll be painting parts. I want a finish that is about the same as it originally had. I'm back to the idea of doing it myself. Base coat, then color coat. Maybe something like acrylic enamel with a hardener. I have a gun and compressor now and thought I might get a new gun to help it out. I used it to paint construction equipment years ago. An earlier thread gave a good source for paint. Anyone else have any thought or quotes they'd share. Maybe I'm being too cheap, but 2 grand seems like a lot for the amount of work I'm talking about. John J |

Thanks to everyone sharing tips, and especially pictures on this. I'm not looking for a "factory" paint job - in fact, I want to maintain the look of a "been there, done that" jeep. I was thinking a Nantucket Red as it's a washed out color to being with. Considering my jeep will be on the beach as much as in the garage, I am mostly worried about rust (I give it a top-to-bottom hose down each time it comes off the beach to help with sand and salt). It's good to hear that others are hearing near $2k for a paint job, so the quote I got isn't way out of whack, but it's still a lot of money than I was expecting to pay. If I had a proper "working" garage I would attempt it myself. Maybe there should be self-service painting stalls like there are self-service car washes ;-) |

I'm going to be painting mine soon, prep work is the key. Sand it your self to save $$. Tractor supply makes a great implement /tractor paint in several colors and some have rolled it on and sanded it smooth. Read a thread on paint from the ECJ5 page; http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread....=tractor+supply Here's another; http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/showthread.php?t=79145 Another problem can be your city or county codes, lots of cities don't want you painting you own vehicle in your own garage for any reason. Might want to check in your locale. |

For 2 grand you can buy a portable garage ( for spray room), gun, small compressor a couple cans of rustoleum, shoot it yourself. I did mine in my garage. You don't need a lot of room, the 3B's small anyway. The benefits to that are... you will have a compressor and gun for other projects, a place to park the jeep out of the elements and a red 3B, and you'll be able to do any touch ups yourself when needed. Here's mine ![]() ![]() [IMG]http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p248/DonK53/20.jpg[/IMG

You can buy a lot of rattle-cans of rustoleum for $2000... Seriously, car paint jobs from the factory used to be really horrible. Orange peel, runs, missed areas, overspray...new cars with robot-applied clearcoat finishes are really amazing. The rules used to be "never buy a red car" (because red paint faded so badly) and "never choose a metallic paint color" (because the metallic paint peeled off). Plenty of "restored" cars look much better than the did when new. |
