Getting to the end of my build the question has arisen on what type of wiper, vacuum or electric. Remembering from my childhood vacuum wipers were slow at stop lights while the engine was at an idle. Electric just plugged along at any speed. I have to wonder how well vacuum will work coming out of a muddy situation if I am going down a trail at an idle or just above it. I am running a V6 with a good source for vacuum. I would like to hear some debate and experiences with the two types of wipers. |

I'm keeping my vacuum wipers just nostalgic reasons. If you go electric the hot item is marine wipers that have more than 90deg swing (cheap JC Whitneys have only 90 deg swing) |

I like vacuum wipers. Now, electric are probably better, but I like how the wipers slow down when starting from a light and speed up when going downhill. It just 'sorta fits' with an old car. |

Brian, Obviously running a V6 anyway, you're not that concerned with originality, so my recommendation would be to go with the electric wipers, and if the jeep is a frequent driver, install an intermittent switch to control them. Electric motors are constant, even in hard rains, thus you'll never regret using them (vs. the vacuum). Another suggestion if you go the electric route, buy marine grade wiper motors as they're sealed against moisture contamination and generally come in kits with stainless accessories and brass securing nuts; (a bit more expensive, but they'll usually outlast the automotive kits). Thanks Larry I did not know about the marine wipers. How does the bolt pattern match up? I got lucky and found a tilt out windshield in a barn. I think it has never been mounted. The guy put 2 complete vacuum wipers in with the deal. They are OEM NOS they were in individual boxes marked Wills Kiser. Complete down to the OEM blades. Your right about the V6 and being stock maybe they would serve some one else better. Thanks for the reply |

Brian, Here is the wiper motor that I went with: Marine wiper motor There was a different one that I wanted to go with that seemed heavier duty, but they were about $200 a pop. The problem that I had was finding correct wiper arms; it was really tough to find arms that were short enough. I eventually found arms and blades on Amazon.com. I used a Cole Hersee wiper switch and it all seems to work fine so far. I added a quick disconnect (see pic below) so that I can still put the windshield down. The wiper blade currently barely hits the hood if I lay the windshield down, but that is because my hood blocks are not as tall as they should be. Let me know if you're interested in more information. ![]() |

Doug, Please post a photo of the motors mounted on your w/s. Brian, The electric motors mount up pretty good using the same holes in the w/s; however, most that I've seen and mounted use only the center shaft hole and a single machine screw on one side of the motor. Another thing you want to make sure of is that the shaft of the motor is long enough. Now for the problem with the flip out style w/s using electric wiper motors: if mounted in the original vacuum brackets (and they line up really nice), the top of the motors will end up being too high and as a result, the inner frame will flip out and up only an inch or two, (the top of the motor will strike the outter frame above the motors). What I'm finding on these w/s's is that the motors have to be inverted if you want the inner frame to flip completely out as it was designed to. If you already have the vacuum wipers and they're new, I'd go with them since they mount up so well and then you can always change them out if they don't perform to your satisfaction. If you had a standard w/s and didn't have the vacuum wiper motors, then is when I'd go the electric route, (sorry for any confusion, but I wasn't aware of what you had). Larry S. |

Larry, Only have the driver side motor right now. I'll get around to the other one, but we get so little rain here that it's not a priority. It mounts using the threaded shaft and it also has a bracket on one end that I haven't bolted down yet. Works just fine the way it is. It is two speed and has adjustable sweep. ![]()

Doug, Looks like some very nice (high dollar) motors you have. They sure mount much easier at the bottom of the standard w/s than they do at the top of a flip out w/s. A lot of the fellows around here with vintage autos and trucks, use Rain-X on their w/s's and never worry about wipers. I was impressed with how well that stuff actually works (I now use it on my jeep w/s's). Larry |

I had vacuum on my 63 Willys pickup worked fine as the fuel pump on the I-6(230) had a vacuum pump on top of it ,, but when the V-8 was installed they would all butt stop when you left off it ,,I went with a electric upgrade from Jeepsterman.com ,,,, So since Im installing a V-8 in my 3b I vote for the Electric wipers as its going to be my daily driver.. I bought mine from QUADRATEC Haven't installed them yet but they look well made,, dont know if they are 90 or 90 plus degree,,,, |

Like Oswald I also have a manual wiper and like Doug I only have the drivers side. It keeps it road legal ,works when needed and I attempt to limit my wet wheather driving. It is a marine grade unit. |
