Heres some pics of my 3b's engine, just rebuilt and painted it. I replaced the crank, as it had been machined several times in its life, and kept giving me problems. Now runs like a champ.![]() ![]()

Paradigm, Unless my eyes are playing a joke on me, it appears your gas line is copper. If so, may I strongly suggest replacing it with a steel line? |

Your project is looking good. The engine has a nice clean rebuilt look to it now. I'm interested in the "air breathers" you have installed on the oil fill tube and the valve cover. What kind are they? Do you have a name and model number. I have a need for something like that on a non-Willys project. If you still have the fan shroud I'd like to encourage you to install it. It'll help keep the air flow over the whole engine and aid in cooling. This is more important at low speeds such as slugging your way through the mud. The starter,,,what can you tell me about the starter? It ain't original. Is it the Toyota one that we keep hearing about? Sure is pretty country. Thank you. |

Yes it is copper (I know crazy right?) I just havnt gotten to replacing it yet. There are some final touches Im going to do here soon, one of them is replacing those copper lines (I dont know who did it, or why). The air breathers I got were at Advanced Auto Parts. I wanted to do away with the oil bath air cleaner. So as you can see I just added those where there were any air ports. The one on top was some cheap air cleaner. Also the blue ones are washable/reuseable. I intend to change the carb air cleaner to one of those eventually. As for the starter. Ive noticed them for sale on several places now, as they are drop in replacement/upgrades. Originally I got mine from Mac Jeep parts. A page I found on here somewhere. Its a nice heavy duty starter and never fails. My original failed, and I was faced with rebuilding that monstrocity... the price to rebuild it, was comparable, and frankly I LOVE the new starter. Never fails even in cold weather (we got 5 inches of snow last week!) I dont believe that the fan shroud does anything. I know the idea here is that its directing the airflow, but the fact that I live in a place that got snow in JULY, not to mention my engine runs cool and never overheats as it is.. Im not really worried about it. As long as the thermostat is functioning properly, that rusted out piece of crap fan shroud isnt going to do anything. Also I replaced the radiotor a while back, and it doesnt really have the holes for it, and Im scared to try and put them in there without damaging the radiator. I replaced so many odd bolts screws nuts washers on this rebuild. Every joe dick and harry Shadetree mechanic has worked on this thing, and there was some really odd things going on. I know Ive removed some 'original' parts in my own rebuild. oil bath air cleaner, fan shroud, and starter I look at the air cleaner and starter as MUCH improved this way.. and the fan shroud is mearly cosmetic, and I dont really believe it does much for the engine. I havnt noticed it getting any hotter, not to mention as I said we already got 5inches of snow last week ![]() |

I also replaced every piece of wire on this jeep. There was some really strange things going on, what appeared to be wax-coated SPLICES. lose wires hanging everywhere.. and of course alot of it was the old cloth wireing (which I hate). I redid the wireing myself, and did not buy a wireing harness. Also.. Im a residential electrician, so this was fairly simple to wire IMO. |

SNOW !!!! YUCK !!!! We're in the peak of hurricane season here. The only time the air conditioner in the house stops running is when the thunder and lighting storms knock the electric power off. It's suppose to drop down into the 80's this weekend. YEA !!!!! I don't have a problem with you removing parts as you see necessary. I was concerned about the cooling of your engine,,,but,,, I think you have that situation all worked out. Snow is September,?!?!? Bye, bye shroud. The "replacement" radiator I bought didn't fit well either. I had to weld a 1/2" spacer on each side of the radiator housing to mount the shroud. There is a few not original parts on my rig also. I also removed the cloth covered wiring. I like the use of Carlon under the hood. The blue almost matches your engine paint. I used Ford Blue. What did you use? Stay warm. |

A note about the starter: Its a Denso starter. I am not sure what model of car they were used on.. probably chrysler or something. I bought mine from MacJeepParts over a year ago, however I notice even Kaiserwillys.com is selling them now. A WARNING ABOUT MAC JEEP: I bought mine over a year ago from Mac Jeep Parts, I didnt get to use the starter much before I had to rebuild my engine, but after I was done with my rebuild I put the starter back in.. and guess what.. no start! After much frustration I pulled the starter and bench tested it, to find that it had a short to ground! So I opened it up, and frankly it was a really bad Reman job. The solder joints on the brushes were weak, and one of the brushes was never popped in. So really when it had worked for a short time I was missing a whole brush! Eventually the solder joint worked itself lose and touched the outside casing. I had to resolder it and fix it. THE whole reason I went with a new starter was because I didnt want anymore starter problems. I ended up having to do starter work anyways! Anyhow.. after fixing the solder joints and check it over with a fine tooth comb. I put it back together and it works great now. |

I believe that was Ford Blue, it was the closest I could match to the paint that was on there when I got it. I saw no other layers of paint, and assume it was painted that way many years ago. hah, glad you noticed the carlon tubeing.. or as we call it in the electric biz "smurf tube". Its really nice automotive tubing. Its stiff, and far more durable than that split black tubing you get in auto parts stores. Not to mention its MUCH cheaper!! |

What, no shed for that 'ol gal? Maybe you could borrow the one across the road. I'll echo my buddy Bob in NC regarding the hurricane season, but even as hot as it's been down here all summer on the southeastern Texas Gulfcoast, please keep that snow up there in the mountains.............. All kidd'n aside, it's obvious that when it's not snowing there, you live in one of the most scenic parts of our nation, so believe me when I say we down here would give almost anything to at least visit there with our jeeps, if only once in a lifetime! Take care and stay warm, Larry S. |
