Are they actually illegal?? Ive been using them since I was a kid. I went to find one in an autoparts store, and they said they dont sell them anymore. Someone else told me they are ILLEGAL!? Thats crazy.. Ive never gotten in trouble for having one. I ended up taking it off my schoolbus (since I rarely drive it these days) and putting it on my jeep. Man I can back a schoolbus up within an inch on all sides, using a steering knob. I dont see whats so dangerous about them? Hell the other day I navigated a 4x4 road which traversed a low-flow creek using only the steering knob ![]() All my old clunker and losey goosey steering vehicals I use them on. Dont think I ever actually bought one though. My dad had some layin around and gave them to me years ago. |

You can get one at a Farm store like Tractor Supply or Northern Tool. As for the legality, I would check with a local police station. Good Luck NC Nick |

I have used them for many years on mail routes. The old DJ' s needed a knob to keep up with the slack and wear. My 60 3b has one and I like it. I always wear long sleeve shirts and never get caught in the knob. |

The concept of this one is pretty neat ,, Flip up when you need it & down when you don't.. Little pricey though ,,, Knob |

Smoking grass hurts no one other than yourself (unless you are driving) Drinking and driving hurts other people I assume the only danger in a steering knob is to yourself not having insurance hurts the insurance biz, but xxx (edited) those guys not having current registration hurts the finances of the state... and xxx (edited) those guys too FYI I dont smoke grass these days, and I never drink and drive.. I have insurance and registration, only because the penalties are worse than just paying for the damned thing. |

they should outlaw jewelery while driving - its most likely the cause , however if I read the below correctly you deserve to die if you wear a bracelet that has things hanging off it ... this is how the canadian federal law reads : 203. (1) The steering control system of a vehicle shall be constructed in such a manner that no component or attachment — including any horn actuating mechanism — is capable, during normal driving manoeuvres, of catching the driver’s clothing or the driver’s jewellery, such as a watch, a ring or a bracelet other than a bracelet with loosely attached or dangling members. browsing my provincial laws though I only need a wiper if on a highway and it rains  |

The last thread included a typical statute that you'll find in almost every state. Nevertheless, while you won't see them on vehicles licensed for everyday road use, you'll find them on industrial equipment, farm tractors, logging equipment and the like. Almost every farm store and equipment dealer sells them. They are handy. I suspect the folks that fear them are the same ones that wrap their thumbs around the wheel on a tractor or other off-road rig or piece of equipment. It's also lot like the same folks that used to wrap their hand around the hand crank on a Model T or similar set-up - you won't do that more than once, Lefty. Everything is dangerous, but a little bit of common sense can overcome many things. I know I sound like a public service announcement, but it's generally the stupid stuff that get's you hurt. Too bad you can't tell most folks that. John J 1958 CJ3B - still workin' on mocking up the body |
