I was trying to separate the head from the block on my 3b as I'm getting it ready for shop work. I could not budge the head I was stupid using a screw driver to wedge the head off when I discovered a lone head bolt inside the manifold holding the head on. I quicky removed it and it worked but... I scratched the mating surfaces one ding about .025 inches deep maybe. Is this fatal or can this be planed down smoth again? I though that the surfaces can be planed flat but is this cut too deep? |

Is the .025 gouge in the head or on the deck ? The head can likely be shaved .025. This depends on the head compression ratio you now have. In fact it will likely be a benefit. As that would raise the compression ratio. You might gain around 2 or 3 HP. |

The gouge is on the deck the head appears ok and the cut in the deck does not extend all the way to the cylinders its about .5 cm long. never thought of this as a benefit. I know that one should never use a screw driver that way

If the engine is going into the shop, then they can "deck" the block and you are good to go. j |

I'd let the machinist know about it but let him make the call on whether it needs the block machined. Look around the #2,#3 valve seats for small cracks in the block. Decking the block cost me $80 this past winter during a $100 crack repair. May not need anything done to it at all. ![]() |
