Good Morning, This is my first posting on the CJ3B Bulletin Board. My name is Don and I'm from Hamilton, Ontario Canada. I'm looking for some advice on the best approach to parts purchases. I bought all parts locally for my engine rebuild. I've also made one purchase through Willys Overland for some OEM parts that I wanted exact parts, like rad hoses. I now have to purchase a rather large number of parts like clutch assembly, shocks, wiring harnes, brake lines, etc. Any advice that my new friends out there could provide on the best way to go about it, would be greatly appreciated!!!. Please see below, a short background on our Jeep history. I've been driving Jeeps since 1980, and am currently on my 5th, a Liberty in view of my 17-year old son having laid claim to my 93 YJ as his 17th birthday present. I acquired my 6th Jeep, a 1960 CJ3B in April. We have completely dissembled the Jeep and have been proceeding on restoration. The frame was in good condition, needed straightening due to plowing, all welds redone, sandblasted, primed, epoxy painted. Engine tear down completed, block in good condition, found evidence of earlier rebuild with some parts stamped 1973. Needed boring, pistons, rings and exhaust valves. Rebuild completed including nice paint job and has been set back on frame on new mounts. Carburetor, Distributor, Alternator and Starter all overhauled. Tub is a total loss, would appreciate some thoughts on the Overland tub. Would really like to stay all original, especially in view of the engine, frame and drive train, etc. all being original. I have a neighbour that winters in Arizona and will be leaving soon. He's going to look around for an original tub for me this winter. In the process of inspecting the clutch, transfer case and transmission. Hope to have all reassembled and re-installed over the next month with a goal of firing up the engine and taking a frame ride before the snow falls. Look forward to hearing from you. P.S. I use my wife's email: janet.hull@sympatico.ca from home. don |

hi Don, this site is simply awesome with offering help and expertese and they helped me get'er going and stopping. I'm in Calgary so we face same "purchasing" issue , here's what I do: - ask vendor if they will ship US/Canada postal - their the best way - never ship courier (like UPS) unless there is no other way - put together two lists, smaller 'postal' stuff and 'truck/courier' sized stuff - try and find a vendor that has everything on your list, like Walck's cause multiple shipments will of course compound shipping costs - if in doubt your better off ordering things your not 100% sure you need as you can always throw it up on ebay later Walck's, Willys-Overland etc are great places and know the issue with cross border shipments so will accomadate you with using the postal service ... in Ont there is also Willys-Acres , in the west for willys there's Gemini Sales in Burnaby, Gemini helped me get advance adapters items at fare price for yj. if you have an international airport close by and a US/Cdn courier that allows you to do your own customs then thats also possible, a jeep guy in edmonton does this and says he saves a bundle walking the 50ft to customs desk himself - am looking into this more ... hope that helps, yup were screwed but "bigger orders" less often and use Canada Post when you can will keep $ in your pocket. Don, I also welcome you from way down in southeast Texas near the Gulf of Mexico. As Randy has stated (and I echo every word), this is one great site to not only visit and learn from, but the regular posters are some of the best folks with vintage 3B (and other) jeeps you'll find anywhere. The tech advise is top notch as well. Randy has listed a few parts vendors and if you'll click on the Site Map in the Home Page header, then click Links, then Parts, you'll find a great many vendors listed. Regarding repro/after-market tubs, I only know of one 3B tub mfg., that being MD Juan in the Phillipines. Though that mfg's tub is pretty much true to the original, the product itself generally requires quite a bit of drilling and fitting to enable it to fit an original chassis. It is my understanding from others and several articles that I've read, that the amount of addt'l. work required to get the tubs and other body parts to fit correctly, all depends on the selling vendor (which performs those needed items before the product is sold). You've selected one of the better vendors with Willys-Overland, as they (again, from others I've had conversations with, e-mails with, and/or read about) supposedly perform many of the pre-sale alignment requirements on the tubs they sell. Having mounted one the original mfg'd. tubs from MD Juan just over a year ago, it is advisable to remove all of the mfg's. primer from the metal and re-prepare it for your choice of paint; (W-O may perform this as well). I wish you the best on your new project and know you'll enjoy it to the fullest, once it's complete. Larry S. |

Don Hull, Welcome to the CJ-3B Page Bulletin Board I have little experience in Canadian availability issues. But I can advise you that certain replacement components should be given priority over other components concerning quality. You can get by using common, often inferior components in a few areas but other replacements demand only the best parts . The clutch is certainly one such area you don't want to compromise quality by seeking low cost. In case you or someone else needs ... I have an extra 8-1/2" Auburn pressure plate I will be posting on the Parts Board soon. I'm not a parts dealer I just have a few extra things available now and then. |

I have used Walck's with great success. They are very knowledgeable. Everyone seems to have about the same prices so I stick with someone who appears to know my Jeep. Good Luck NC Nick |

I agree with NC Nick. Walck's is great to deal with. Over the weekend, I placed an internet order with them for some pieces and parts to attach a set of axles to a frame so I can roll it under cover for the winter. I accidentally ordered all of the same shackles instead of two for each side. Monday morning I get an email from Walck's to confirm if that is what I really wanted. That was a great catch/ service on their part. They could have just shipped out what I ordered and I would have been stuck for another week until I could return/ re-order the correct parts. I've also ordered from Krage and Willys Overland with no problems. All three seem to have about the same prices. |

Hello Don, Welcome to the best jeep site in the world in my opinion. These gentlemen are very helpful. I live just west of you in Brant County and I am slowly building a driver that involves a 42 MB body on a 56 cj5 frame. I have had good experiences dealing with both Kaiser Willys in South Carolina and Northwest Military in Idaho. I agree with the above posters regarding going with US and Canada post whenever you can. UPS always involves brokerage fees that can be quite hefty even on fairly small stuff. Good luck with your project. By the way, would you mind sharing some of your local sources of engine parts, etc.? I have an F-head that I'd like to rebuild for use in my project. I would also love to see what you have accomplished so far---I'll even bring the coffee! Gary |

Ian here in Nova Scotia, great to see all the Cdn owners appearing on this post. I will say I have had great luck with Willys Overland and most recently with Walcks. i have also bought parts directly from 4wd Columbiana in Ohio, only a 3.5 sprint from Hamilton. I was most disappointed with Willys Overland and the Owner Marcusafter the snide remarks he made about our 3b's, he straight out doesnt like them and prefers the miltary jeeps. Price can be off to. If your looking to pick up shock absorbers head over to Pep boys in Amherst NY on Niagara falls blvd, or any pep boys they have the spec'd Munroe shocks that fit really well and are a 1/4 of the prices I found here in Nova Scotia and in around the GTA. If your looking for exhaust parts seek out a Walker exhaust dealer , a hint given to me by Neil Graham from up in the haliburton area, still cheaper and better than having a custom exhaust bent by local muffler shop in your area and it will bolt right in. Also another guy who may have waht you need is Ralph Journeau in Welland, has a small home business called niagara Miltary parts, really knowledgable gent. If your up fora challenge and really perfect body panels, search out Jeep Panels plus in South paris , Maine, . Owner is Sheldon green and son Stephen really know how to knock out a decent body. I too look forward to seeing where you have purchased engine parts as that is my next chore. If Ambonimb will bring the coffee i'll bring the donuts and tell me the saturday , can fly in from the East Coast. if your still looking to toss the body and go with a reproduction, can i encourage you to save the firewall and cowl for me to take of your hands.

Don, I forgot to mention for the wiring harness if your looking for the original cloth covered style try vintage wiring of Maine or try Walcks as he claims he makes his own and eill custom build for you if you want something extra like turn signals. As for brake lines, cheappest method is drop by napa and pick some tubing and ferrules and make them yourself with a good quality double flaring maker kit, not a Princess Auto variety kit. For the flexible lines I recommend 4wd in Columbiana ohio www.4wd.com or if to want this side of the border maybe try National 4wd drive in Burlington. Contact me if you want to. I was thinking of going to Toledo to pick up a clutch assembly from WO in the next couple weeks. |
