Being a pretty big boy, I find the steering wheel of my 3B to be too awkward. Who has changed their's and what is the best alternative? I don't want to lose leverage in steering at slow speeds but I have to either trim down the wheel or my gut.

cdover73, I fill your pain .. Weighing in at 300lbs & 6'2'' tall I have gone to great troubles making a 3b fit me & my belly.. I bought a body that was exstended 4" to fit my long legs & Ive got a tilted steering collium out of a S-10 for her & Im going with a Grant Steering Wheel,, Im not at my home right now but when I get there tonight Ill show you a picture of it .. I Like the Hard foam around the wheel gives me good grip for close turns,, & it will be No power steering in her ether.. Not sure if I can fit it in the motor area with the AMC 360 ,, But I dont need it anyway,, I drove the old 74 CJ-5 for 15 years (thats what Im putting the body on)with no power steering (& a Grant wheel) or power brakes,, If you watch E-bay from time to time you will see them cheap on there,, New ones are close to 100 bucks ...And you will need a Adaptor kit for it too,, I found one for my 64 Willys CJ-5 but Im not sure if the 3bs were the same or not.. This is the style Im running with... steering wheel And this looks like the kit you should need... installation kit |

There have been people who opted to go the other direction.... They have pushed the seat further aft. Now in the 3B one would have to replace or modify the seat frame..... It was accomplished by cutting a notch in the wheelhouse where it interfered with the seat frame when moving the seat rearwards. Once the correct distance aft is obtained they welded sheet metal around the hole (facing aft) and voila! - the notch. It sticks out a little into the rear wheel area, but not much, and isn't really visible unless you look for it. If you want to improve your steering ratio and want to do it on the cheap, swap in the steering box from any of the following jeeps. Any tuxedo park mark IV M38A1 Any V-6 STOCK FROM THE FACTORY cj5 or cj6 Those boxes are a direct bolt in as long as you get the pittman arm along with the steering box. j |

I had the notch in the wheelhouse (on my 74 CJ-5) where it interfered with the seat frame when moving the seat rearwards. And it did help ,, But changing out the Wheel made it even nicer as the seat was starting to move back to far ..Wasn't comfortable with str-8 armimg the wheel ,,

See Ed Wilson's article with photos of how he moved his seat back a few inches. It's in the What's New list on the home page. Derek |
