My '53 was bought without a gas tank under the seat, the original glass-bowl fuel pump in place but kinked off, a boat gas tank in the back, and an in-line electric fuel pump. I read a lot about putting a regulator in the line to keep the pressure around 1.5 - 2 lbs. I run a new Solex carb. The engine runs fine as is but I want to put a new tank and fuel pump in it as designed. How do I determine if I need a 5 or 6 hole tank and sending unit? I have looked at the links for determining your model, but it was vague how to tell the difference. I can't find my serial numbers so that is no help. Does the mechanical pump provide the proper lower pressures for the carb? Is running the electric pump without a regulator a major no-no or does it really matter? |

cdover73, Log on here: http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/FuelTank.html Then Scroll down to Three "B" Tanks Any 2A 3A or 3B tank can work for your 1953, but the pre 1954 tanks with 5 hole guage mounting are technically correct. The proper functioning mechanical fuel pump supplies the correct psi for the Carter carburetor only. I hear tell that the Solex will need less pressure and this is critical for it to function well. |
