The port in my head for the heater hose and the un-used port in my water pump have brass plugs. I re-installed them using thread sealer. I dont know if these are original but I was thinking this is a good thing because they wont rust. Not only that, they also polish up nice ! But then I began to contemplate whether or not there are any downsides to using brass in a cast iron port when coolant / heat is involved. Maybe expansion or ??? Any one have any opinions ? Or facts ? |

Removal later on?? Sometimes brass may be too soft to take the torque to remove one that is sealed in place.... I never had that problem with a jeep, but I sure did have that problem with a 4 inch sewer pipe cleanout plug a few years back. I put a wrench to that brass fitting and the center ripped right out leaving a 1.5 inch hole and the rest of the broken plug stuck in the cleanout. Fortunately a sawzall and some delicate sawing to keep the slug from falling into the drain and prevent cutting of the threads on the pipe came to the rescue. That'd not be possible with a jeep engine. |
