I have a 1957 3B that was purchased by my father from the US border Patrol. The original Paint is the Border Patrols light green color so I figured it must have been built especially for them. Now my questions are were the 3B's built for the government or military any different than the civilian versions? And also has anyone ever seen a Border Patrol 3B? I would like to find out everything I can about this 3B before I restore it. |

Interesting....I too have what I think is a Border Patrol Jeep. It is a CJ5 with a T-98A 4 speed transmission. The Jeep has a brass plate in it that has all sorts of government contract information and there is a paper glued onto the dash that also has warranty information for government owners. The Jeep came with a white hard top that, toward the front in the middle has a set of bolt holes that matches an old Federal Corporation siren. The Jeep is a light green. I had first thought it was a US Forest Service Jeep, but based on yelled "disparaging "comments directed toward me when driving the Jeep in Phoenix, I don't think it's Forest Service green..... Hey Elawson, My Jeep also came with a white top which is long rusted away because my dad did not think he would ever need it so he left it outside in the north west rain for thirty years. But I do remember my brother showing me where the lights and siren were mounted. I don't remember ever seeing a brass plate with any government info on it but that may have been removed along with the siren and lights. Do you have any photos of your CJ-5 I could see? Thanks |

Intresting, I have a 57 3b that I think was from the forest service - original paint was Forest Service Green. Its missing a roughly 5x5 Info plate on the dash like the ones you see on M38A1. Willys might of had a large Federal contract for 3b that year. |

If you go to the "What's a CJ-3B" on this site's home page, you'll see my CJ-5. I can send you pictures of whatever you'd like to see on the Jeep. Eric |

Eric, To answer your question regarding government sped'd jeeps vs. civilian jeeps quickly and to the point, "yes", the specifications from the US Gov't. were from VERY to SOMEWHAT different, depending on which branch of the military service and/or other federal departments issued the purchase order. To give you an idea, military jeeps as well as trucks mfg'd. for the US Marine Corps are different from the same brand and GVW vehicles mfg'd. for the Army, Navy and Air Force. The Forest Service and Border Patrol also are able to design their own set of specifications, depending upon the use and location of the vehicle. Most every gov't specified vehicle I've ever seen, including common sedans, have a gov't. tag affixed somewhere on the vehicle, usually inside and in plain sight. Hope this helps. Larry S. |
