I just found and read the new addition about the Silent Intermediate Gear mod. Questions My transfer case is so noisy it drowns out the engine noise. 1) What are the odds it's all intermediate shaft issues? 2) Or is it pretty common to have to rebuild the whole transfer case? I'm ready to install an overdrive I just bought from Herm and figure I should deal with the transfer case noise while I've got it open. I have no issues with it popping out of gear, hard shifting or anything else - just noise. The whole drive train works like a charm right now. What do you all recommend? |

johnrb, That's an excellent article by Randy Buchanan. I meant to comment on his article seen here: http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/DrivetrainTips.html Yes it's true, D-18's are really loud when in low range. I rather like the growl myself. Willys Overland was certainly aware of the noise. Dana Spicer specifically addressed the noise issue twice. The first time Dana Spicer increased the intermediate shaft diameter from 1-1/8 inch to 1-1/4". At this time (midyear 1954) they also redesigned the gears yeilding finer pitched teeth. The result was an improvement, but as Randy Buchanan points out the issue did not dissappear. The next time Dana Spicer addressed the issue it lead to the developement of the model 20 transfer case. "JEEP" specifically called the model 20 the Silent Type transfer case. |

If you are gonna have the back cover off for the od install, drop the bottom cover too and get a kit from either Novak or Herm with a new HARD intermediate shaft and good bearings and thrust washers. Try to stay away from the cheap stuff as it isn't worth saving $40. Makes a huge decrease in the whine. If the rest of the case is functioning properly, it probably doesn't need a complete rebuild. |
