Any suggestions on how to get the metal fragments from a broken starter Bendix out of the bell housing where it's rattling around and grinding on the flywheel? I have wedged the dust cover open and rooted around with bent rods and magnets but can't seem to get it all out. Is the only solution to break the transmission loose? I believe the issue is that pieces have gotten behind the flywheel where I can’t get to them. |

I think you'll have to break apart engine and bellhousing. Besides, it may have already ground the ring gear teeth. Remove your spark plugs so you can inspect the ring gear through the starter opening and then you will know. |

The first jeep I ever owned, a Ford GPW when I lived in the Azores, had a solution to that problem. Some prior owner cut a square hole in the bottom of the bell housing. He tapped four holes around the square hole and made a cover and added a gasket for good measure. It was a smallish hole, maybe an inch and a half square. Actually that made it quite easy to inspect and get into that area. It sure beats pulling the engine and replacing / repairing all of the exhaust bolts that are seized into place. |
