I've already voted,, but ya'll know me,,, I've got to have a comment.

I'm all for this article on body repair, welding etc. I wish it'd been here when I was doing mine for the last two years. But I have another one to do,, so bring it on..

However,, :ph43r: are we gonna have to listen to Oldtime tell us about gas welding with coat hangers again??? (just kidding Ken) Actually since I read that line from one of your post, I've used coat hanger as a filler while doing some MIG welding. Thanks for the tip.

Doubt if anything came out worse than my "welds." The more information the better for I also have another one in the works and want it to turn out better than the first.

Don,
Have you set in motion an online conspiracy again ?
I honestly don't remember divulging any top secret coat hanger information in the past.
I imajine you all probably wanna know just what kinda coat hangers I prefer. Don't ya !
What do you figure I like ? Perhaps I like either the skinny white ones or maybe I really like the thicker ones with stiff cardboard bottoms.
I recon you also wanna know if I leave em crooked or if I straighen um out and then cut um shorter.
Sure you probably wonder why does he always get all the good coat hangers ? Don't ya !
Does he have some "big time" connections at the Salvation Army or something ?
Well if you all really "just have to know" then read on....

In case you do not know; I am currently in the middle of rebuilding a 1962 3B.
The "running gear" has been completed going on a few years now. That portion is nearly pristine.
The original tub was a total loss. So I bought an unwanted 1962 tub from a fellow CJ3B PAGE viewer a couple of years ago.
That tub is in very poor condition. Every single panel needs serious attention including the cowl. You name it, it is rough.
I have spent ZERO (as in the big goose egg ) for sheetmetal to do the repairs.
For documented reference; I used an unwanted 3B hood having a multitude of drilled holes that were welded up.
Then the hood was beaten back flat and used to repair the floor pans. Likewise all body patches were taken from various old 3B body pieces.

Why bother ? So when completed, I can truely say "all sheetmetal is original Willys metal."
Sorry for the low blow Jeepanels Plus and Classic Enterprizes ! I simply consider my effort as "extreme frugal".
In case you wonder; has he expanded the outer limits of sanity ? NO !
Finally, I do confess, I have spent ZILCH on filler metal for the tub welding repairs.
Yes, you read correctly... need I spell it out ?

DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Obviously, I do my own welding and body work and have done that for so long that if I divulged how far back, you guys would wonder where cavemen bought welding machines, ha!

Actually Ken, there has to be a good many fellows out there that would appreciate having as much knowledge as possible on this particular subject, so the more that's available to them, the better their restorations and/or repairs will be.

Regarding the coat hangar welding theory, I couldn't begin to tell how many of those I've used over the years when gas welding sheet metal panels. In fact, I think one of the last 1/4 ton jeep trailers I restored for a customer was probably a third coat hanger when all was said and done!

One of our Houston Area Flatfender Club members has just recently completed welding in new floor panels in his '54 3B restoration and probably could lend some good assistance to such a site.

this would be great and timely for my upcoming tub patch work

in looking around 3B page and in previous topics there are alot of tips like using
the frame as a 'jig' when replacing hat channel etc, be nice to have it all in one
place;
57 3B : big speedo / Hurricane / YF 938 SD / IAY-4012 / T90 / D18 / 5.375 final drive / open diffs / Firestone 6ply Military NDCC / 12v Delco SI alt / Kayline Top / venting windshield / tub patched / "still fixing leaks one at a time"

89 wrangler : h/duty axles + 5spd / 200+hp 4.2L / arb locked / multiport fuel inj / warn hubs+winch / 1/4 mil km / fishing+trail riding / gets me to work

So how well does a mig welder do on 3B body repairs.I self taught myself on doing some hole filling on my 73 Commando. At first I was getting exteemly frustrated. But after a few holes I had it all figured out.Fixed a metal top as well.I then graduated to building a few swing away tire carriers for my Commandos. But if it comes down to life saving welds,I leave that to the professionals!!!

So lets hear about these coat hanger welds.God knows the wife has enough of them laying around!!!

I,ve been welding for at least 45 years of my 55 years on this earth.. As my father had a friend that could weld,, He welded when there was no Mig welders made yet.. He taught me to use what you had to weld with,, My first weld was a set of forks to my bike think I was nine almost didnt live to see 10 when they fell off  when I was in a wheely.. That taught the importance of flux to keep oxygen away from any welds a lesson learned the hard way,,I've welded exhast pipes & sheet metal on bodys with coat hanger welds,, He taught me a bunch of secrets when you dont have what you need ,,, I have used a cheap Monkey Wards 160 amp 220volt (pluged into the Dryer socket) as a cutting torch, by turning it as high as I could with a 1/8 rod & blow threw 1/4 inch steel to build wood stoves for extra cash,, Sold about 5 this way till I could afford a torch, It made clean up a lot easyer,,

YOU HAVE GOTTA GET USED TO BEING BURNED AS ITS IMPORTANT TO KEEP A WELD GOING TILL YOUR FINISHED THE WELD.. as every time you stop it makes it weak..
(wish I had a dime for ever scare on my body)

Ive been certafied in every kind of welding ASME & AWS (steel, stainless steel & alluminum) Flat, Vertal and over head (ouch!!),,
You can read a ton of books on the subject ,, but till you get a stick or a gun in your hands you'll never be a welder,, Its really simple to do & they make leathers to help you withstand the spaws flying all over you ,,

Noff said get out there & burn some wire or rods ,,

FLASH BURN ,, now thats another story..

Alright there you have it, I seem to have stated a topic which I and others think would make a great addition to the website Derek and Ken. How about it? I'm not one to write the page as my expierence in welding theory extends to a ten minute lesson on a mig and learning from my mistakes and testing my joints with a rubber mallet after they cool. I can only elaborate on the lessons I have been learning in Mig and using a friends pinch resistnce welder.
So when can a page be created. Seems there is wealth of expierence wanting to be tapped into and help out. Let one of the voters create another masterpiece of valuable info on the page.
Hogs head comes out on top and Larry too!

A section on welding would be great. On occasion, these old beast need some patch work. While I can't speak for the rest of the board, I would like to see a beginers guide to welding. I know the welds won't be pretty and will have to have alot of grinding to make them look presentable but the information would be nice.

OK, a couple of people have hit the nail on the head here: somebody has to write the article and take the photos. If I relied entirely on the spare time and the expertise that I personally have, The CJ3B Page would be a lot thinner than the 1000 pages it currently contains. Even the Tech pages that I put together by assembling comments from the Bulletin Board and finding appropriate illustrations, take a lot of time to prepare. And with something like welding, that kind of page might be considered unsafe.

So first of all somebody has to look around the web and see what is already available, and maybe then one of you knowledgeable guys has to sit down and methodically draft some notes about all the important basics, and figure out who could take some pictures illustrating them. You provide me with that, and you'll see the page online in short order.

I am not a welder by trade but have used all four typs of welding .Gas,Arc ,Mig ,Tig, and have a ton of experence in each,Each process has its place in restoration. My best advse to a serious beginer would be to buy a older MIG , name brand machine .I bought a Miller 35S wire welder for $50.00 and works great ,new ones cost about 2 grand and I don,t think produce better welds or work better.
I do own a cheap 115 volt mig welder but think you will learn to hate welding on a cheap machine. Gas welding is great but you can do a ton of heat damage real quick. Leave arc welding frame repair .Buy a TIG welder when you know what your doing. Real Jeeps are not bought their made. Jerry
