Well today as I painted my newly blasted, salvaged, donar wheels I noticed they weren't all the same. I thought as I flipped them some felt heavier than others. Sure enough, some are 4 1/2"s and some 5". There are 3) 5's and 2) 4.5's. You can see the two middle rims in the pic are thinner. I'm thinking the two fronts and the spare should be the 5's and the two smaller 4.5 wheels on the back.

The 4.50 x 16 Kelsey Hayes is standard for all pre 1963 civilian Jeeps. Kelsey Hayes produced different versions of 5.00 x 16" wheels for various Jeeps. CJ-3B's could be fitted with an optional 5.00 x 16" heavy duty wheel. This same wheel was standard on M606. This particular heavy duty wheel can be identified by a single 1/8" diameter hole that is drilled through the mounting ring. The common 4.50 x 16 " wheel weighs 19 pounds and is intended for 6.00 or 6.50 tires . The optional 5.00 x 16 " wheel weighs 25 pounds and is intended for 7.00 x 16 tires. |

Yup, saw the 1/8th hole. All my tires are 7.00 x 16, you think that'll be okay to run the (now) undersized rims on the rear? |

Lots of guys do it but here's some insight....... My very first Jeep was a CJ2A that had 7.50 x 16 Goodyear Hi Miler Extra Grips (8 PR) mounted onto rusty 4-1/2 x 16 rims. The rims were completely crushed in the process of dismounting those tires. |

I'm running 7.00x16 coker/firestones on my 4.5x16 rims and no problems yet, of course I'd not tried to dismount them. |

they look awesome for whatever reason if i had 2 slightly wider rims i'd most likely put them on the rear wheels how long before you get them on the 3B - i cant wait |

Gonna go with them on the front, it have to be better to have them where the load and steering matters most I'd think. The 3B is waiting for brakes and wheel bearings, hopefully soon. I've just been doing what money and limited skills will allow until someone helps with the hard stuff. I've found the guy too, and as soon as he can he's coming over to take a look. |

Oldtime, I haven't been around here long but you are an encyclopedia on ' Jeep'. So , could you tell me something about the wheels on my '64 3B. I believe that the 5 wheels that I have that came with the Jeep to be original. Can't be 100% sure on that though. All 5 match each other and are 15 inch. I've read so much stuff about the 3B I can't even begin to remember where it all came from. I'm pretty sure that the 15 inch were an option on the '64, can you shed any light on that? |
Old retired fart living in Ione, WA. I have a 1964 CJ3B. Recently overhauled original motor, transmission and overdrive. 11" Bronco drum brakes on all 4. Needs a new coat of paint but that will have to wait till next summer, it's next summer and I'm working on that now UPS & FEDEX will continue to profit

Factory Service Standards changed from year to year. The 4-1/2" x 15" KH wheels became standard on all CJ's in 1963. I thought I had an in depth post describing over a dozen of the varios KH wheels. I'll try to see if I can find that data. This forum is hard to search and the Willys Group Index really needs to be implemented somehow. |

Thanks Jeeper but look at the date of this thread, I've long since moved past that wheel/tire set. |

Speaking of wheels, I have 15 inch wheels on my 3B. It was mentioned that the Jeep came standard with 16 inch wheels. Were the 15" optional are they rare, any advantages or disadvantages with 15 over 16 inch? |

I figured that you might be getting a second set ready for the road. I have my NDTs and a set of 31-1050s on black wheels for the trailrides too. I figured everyone had or has two sets LOL
