DJ wheel cylinders; Trying to find brake parts...

Hello, all! Sorry for my absence lately - I've been busy with friends, chores, and a new summer farm job, with a little Jeep work thrown in here and there. I got the rear axle seal installed and it was, indeed, the correct part, worked a little more on the brakes, and currently have a front hub grease seal on order.

I've given up on trying to rebuild my wheel cylinders, and have decided to go the extra $$$ to buy new ones - but I'm having trouble finding the correct ones.

My DJ has 13/16" rear cylinders, and 1 1/8" fronts, rather than the 3/4" and 1" I was expecting. Where can I find reproduction cylinders of the correct bore size?

Thanks, ba25. I only have two off at the moment (one front and one rear), and from what I've been told any corrosion that honing doesn't take out will ruin the rebuild. The rear bore came pretty clean but it has a stripped bleeder and I'm not sure I didn't hone it out too big, and the front still has pits near the center of the bore after honing. The Jeep had been sitting outside for 15 years before I got it, so these cylinders probably hadn't functioned for at least that long.

What do you think? Should I still try rebuilding them?

you just have to clean them as much as possible, then after honing check them for pitting where rubber rides. if mild pitting is right in center you can get away reusing them. as long as the area where rubber rides is OK w/o big holes. you should be OK. I dont think you can go to big if using a drill powered hone.

I see. Given that info, I may give my originals another shot.

Are the Lockheed-Wagner wheel cylinders on mine the original, factory parts, or are they replacements?

Alex if you find out the Rock Auto ones mentioned over at the ECJ5 board work out for ya can you give us part number and application and maybe pics too? $50 apiece is way too much for wheel cylinders, but the Rock Auto price seems in line with reality. <_<

Yep, I can do that. My next step involving the wheel cylinders is going to be seeing if the left front will take a rebuild some time next week, and I may order one of the RockAuto cylinders if it doesn't. I'll let you know.

I know this is an old thread but thought I'd tell you how I got my wheel cylinders apart without beating them to death.

First I removed them and let them soak in brake fluid for about a month.

Didn't help.

Then I dropped them in some boiling water for a few minutes.

Didn't help.

Figured it was time to get out the grease gun, but how to hook it up with what I had available?

I gently heated the bleed screws with a torch so I could get them out without breaking them off.

Check!

Borrowed a grease alemite out of a old ball joint to temporarily replace the bleed screw.

Check!

Took a old rubber garden hose washer, a knife, and cut me some tiny little chunks to stuff into the hole the brake line screws into. (These will be removed when cleaning them up)

Check!

Took a tattered end off of a old brake line and screwed into the hole so that it would compress the little chunk of rubber and seal the hole.

Check!

Hooked the grease gun to the alemite, gave her a few pumps and magically one end of the piston and rubber popped out of the cylinder.

Check

Removed the spring and wiped off some of the grease and dropped it and the piston in a coffee can with diesel fuel

(remember, brake rubber parts do NOT like petroleum products so I'll clean them separately) in the meantime, wipe them down and back in the brake fluid

Check

Wiped out the excess grease left in the cylinder and opened a vise wide and took and found me a socket that was slightly smaller than the piston. Stuck it and the cylinder into the vise and squeezed the other piston and rubber farther inside the cylinder. The grease left helped especially once the piston started moving.

Check

Took it out of the vise, let the socket drop out, and drove the piston and rubber all the way through with a wooden dowel until it dropped out the same end the first one came out of when I pumped the grease in

Check

Set that rubber aside to be cleaned and drop the steel parts into the diesel fuel to soak awhile for future cleaning

Check

I was lucky, very little corrosion on the inside of them and the rubbers and pistons are almost perfect. I'm going to LIGHTLY hone them, clean everything all up, and reinstall
