i've noticed in a number of old willys photos the mirror is turned down

was this to drain water from tube ?

my replacement tube holds water and its starting to rust little inside, tube is pinched close where it attaches to tub, probably would benefit from small hole drilled for drainage

was this same for the originals - any other reason willys turned mirror down ?

Or to communicate with your significant other when you've strapped her underneath to find that rattle/vibration... :-)

Randy, many of the vintage trucks (even the larger ton and a half with flat beds) I've worked on over the years had similar mirror arms attached (inner and outter sliding arms with the set screw lock collar) to either the upper door hinge or in close proximity, and I recall seeing many with a drain hole on the underside near the lowest point ahead of the pinch and all appeared to be factory made holes.

I'd definitely drill one, perhaps from a 3/16" to a 13/64" or even a 1/4" in the arm you have to hopefully resolve the rust issue; you may even want to spray the inside of the tube (after drilling the hole) with some Rustoleum red oxide primer and swish it around some so as to coat the inside really good.

Similar situation with the lower windshield frame arms that didn't have drain holes drilled , huh?

Nope that cant be it... the duct tape to keep the dust outta her mouth would keep her from communicating effectively.

Somebody did not tighten the mounting bolt on the bottom end of the mirror arm. Also many people don't need or even use mirrors to see what is about to plow into them so they never look to see where their mirror is.

I put a short strut arm from the mirror arm to the windshield frame to prevent this, so nobody would take a picture of my mirror hanging down and ask why?

I have the wife ride on the front bumper to check out noises and such, she just carries a little flag and when I can't see the flag any more I stop and back up to pick her up.

considering the blackout lamps, they may have had it turned down to hide the reflection of the mirror. or if it was a cold climate jeep it may have been turned down to keep water from freezing in it. wonder what the sticker said on the quarter?

It is folded down and up against the body so it will not get broke during transport. We did it with other vehicles before we loaded them on planes to deploy. It is probably a M606 or CJ3B for the DOD. It has a black out light and venting windshield.

There was a manufacturing defect in the mirror for a while and all objects appeared to be upside down. Sorta like using a magnifying glass at a distance.

So a Jeep executive decided that if the mirror was upside down to begin with that the end image would appear right side up.

Using these logic skills he went on to be a highy successful politician...

This is an original mirror, does not have a weep hole in mirror or mirror bracket.

thanks for posting Lawrence,

i see the issue now, org mirror was tube pressed close at both ends so
not likely water is getting in;

my replacement mirror is telescoptic to extend mirror , when it rains water
fills the lower tube
