Taking a little out of the upper hose to cause a "gravity feed" to the engine is absolutely the thing to do. One cannot fill the system completely if there is a built in air bubble. Keep the correct pressure cap -- check the manual, I think it's 7 pounds?? I usually drill a small hole in the thermostat - I don't know if that does any good, but it feels like the right thing to do. I'd bet that the overheating problem goes away with the trimmed up top hose. j |

looks good! i work on a lot of newer cars at work, and air locks are a major problem because the rads are lower than the heads. i was forced to buy a tool that pulls a vacuum on the cooling system. it squeezes the radiator hoses flat, and uses the vacuum in the system to pull the new antifreeze in. i don't know what the technical name for the tool is but the brand name is airlift. |

round #2 set timing tonight, was bout 10 deg BTDC now 5, brought idle down from 1100 rpm to about 700 too sounds sweet now, kinda like a 'tiny' harley with manners ... BTW hats off to those that do it by ear, i needed technology ( timing light, eng analyzer ) to get it set ... however, sitting in garage idling for 30+ minutes while i fidled/fumbled it was running hot again according to guage ... is this normal ? no test drive yet - if this doesnt cut it i think drilling the thermostat hole is next |

Drilling the hole allows air to escape to the radiator while filling, prevents vapor lock. its a good thing to do. Next time it gets hot, check the coolant in the radiator with a meat thermometer, compare that reading to the gage, it should be similar within a few degrees. If its way off I'd consider changing the gage. I went through a couple before I found one that was fairly accurate. |

ok looks like I am good , upper hose fix allowed quicker exit into rad which was improvement, but was still over heating, final fix and possibly worse cond seems to have been timing way out (10d BTC); |
