I've got the original generator in my '63 and it's starting to make some noise. As I consider having it rebuilt I wonder if it's not more sensible to switch it out for an altenator. What's the general consensous here, stay with what works or go modern? |

Stay with what works. Do it yourself. Learn something. Keep it simple. ?? |

Goose, I think a 'that depends' answer is appropriate. I have always been an advocate of rebuilding if possible. You already know the part fits so just fix it and no problems. No additional brackets, no alignment issues, no re-drilling, no adjustments to the wiring or gauges. As FM states, keep it simple. However, if your master plan includes driving lamps, a radio, CB, electric winch or other add-ons that would tax the original charging system then perhaps the alteration would be appropriate. |

Replacing the bearings and brushes are easy. Just have to carfull when taking it apart and putting back together. You have to remember you are dealing with 50 year old wiring and it can be brittle |

Thanks for the inspiration to rebuild it guys. Any idea where to find a rebuild kit? All I can find are newly rebuilt intire units but not parts ala cart. |

I took the "other" approach, swapped over to a one wire alternator. I had just bought a new 6 volt battery and headlights, so when my geny couldn't keep my battery charged I built a mount from drawing I had gotten from the guys over at the ECJ5 page. Bought a $40 alternator from Oriellys, a 6volt alternator conversion kit from ebay $19, bolted it on and never looked back. If yours is already 12v it's even easier, oh yeah picked up a used pulley for the 5/8 belt for $10. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Delco-10SI-...=item5193a39ce1 mount here; http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread....or%20conversion |

Thanks for all the help fellas. I ended up taking the generator to an altenator repair shop and they did a jam-up job by cannibalizing mine and another 60's era generator they had from a Chrysler along with new modern bearings. All for $120. ![]() I feel good about that but check this out, having never had the thing off the vehicle before I never noticed these pivot shoulder bolts being so undersized. This is wrong, right? Apparently someone had the generator off before and used different sized bolts than were stock. Or, there is supposed to be bushings slid onto the shoulder to make up the slack, maybe? Cuz the pics of new bolts on KaiserWilly and Walcks look the same size as what I've got.

There are bushings that make up the space. I just took my generator off, and found my bushings destroyed. I would imagine Walcks has them. Or maybe check your local hardware store for something that fits. Thats a fine looking generator there. Let us know how it works out with the bushings. Good Luck |

Thanks Monk, I'll try the local sourses first to cut time. The shop painted the generator all black but I rattle-canned it silver so you'd see it better once installed. |

The bushing is $3 at Walck's![]() Try to get parts that fit and you'll be happier with their performance. |
