There is a mesh of material inside the body of the air cleaner. How do you get it out? How do you remove the lid?

Thanks in advance.

It was not designed to be disassembled. It was considered an assembly unit.

See my post on your other question about putting it in a cleaner.
It's just my luck that something good is going to happen to me today.

Nick, if you'd like to go fully modern, but maintain the original looks of the air cleaner on your jeep, there is now on the market a kit wherein you can actually gut the inside of the cannister altogether and insert a dry-type filter, which will also eliminate having to fill the lower cup with oil.

Back to the wing nut situation, I can tell you without question that of the three or more dozen jeeps I've owned since back in the mid 60's, including three '53 3B's, a '65 3B and a '59 3B (one of the '53 3B's and the '59 3B are both sitting out back under the shed as I type this), ALL of the wing nuts securing the air cleaners to the fire walls have 1/4 x 20 US standard threads that screwed into weld nuts on the interior side of the firewalls.

Larry,

Thank you for all of your information. I am going with wing nuts for the original look. As for the air cleaner, Should I submerse the entire unit in kerosene?

I've done that before when restoring old one's from salvage yards (for jeep restoration projects) and have had good results.
