fellows; I recently acquired an original, like new 1968 Jeep 5/4 ton PU truck, a M715 to go with Cj3b collection. this truck really does go like a willys in 4 wheel drive. the top comes off and the windshield folds down like the 3b. unfortunately I have some wide walnut slabs in my garage and will not be able to park the truck in there for a few months. my question is what should I spray on the truck (under a tarp) to keep the exposed areas from rusting? WD 40? bob in NC |

Congrat's on finding a nice 715 Bob as they're really sought after MV's in this part of the country and only two of our MV club members have them at present. Regarding any rust build up, I'm thinking that if the truck as even a half a$$ paint job on it, unless it is terribly humid where you live, you'd only want to have a tarp set above the truck to allow plenty of air circulation in and around it, but also to keep out inclimate weather. I would think that wrapping the truck in a tarp as you'd do a dish of food with Saran Wrap would only cause problems. Could you not construct a cheapo wooden frame work over the truck and cover it with one of the heavier gray colored harbor Freight style tarps? If push comes to shove however and you simply have to keep it tightly tarped, guess you could spray it down with diesel oil in a pump-up sprayer to keep rust from forming; (expensive but probably less than the amount of WD 40 it'd take!). My opinion only of course regarding the loose fitting gray tarps, but that's the method I use to cover my farm tractors that I can't get inside the shop, and those tractors experience no rust whatsoever. |

Bob, so you yourself got a real truck. Someday I may have to print out some of my M715 stories. PRESERVATION: to maintain in current state or condition. I'll second Larrys advice don't wrap it up tight. That mainly holds the moisure in. |

Bob When I picked up my willys pickup I knew it would be a year plus before it made it into the shop to begin the rebirthing process. It had existing paint in most places, and then again not. As I planned a frame off restoration I painted the truck with rattle can rustoleum red primer - paint, rusted spots and all. Not the glass, handles, etc. but pretty much everything else that I hoped to use. Note: we're talking body parts here. |
