I found out today that my '60 will hold EXACTLY 10.5 gallons of Richmond's finest unleaded petrol. I took an unplanned stop on the side of Broad St on my way to, yes, get fuel. The wife had to come get me. I used the gallon in the fuel canister and after driving the 1320 feet to the gas station, it took exactly 9.6 gallons.

I guess a 51 year old gas gauge cannot be trusted. :D

Yeh, that's the reserve-the negative reserve. Found that also, about 40 years back.

Oh yeah.
I found that out right after I bought my 3B. The gas gauge read half full so I blithely drove around town without a care in the world until it just stopped. I checked everything (well almost) and it wouldn't start. I finally checked the fuel tank. Duh. Empty. :o The gauge still read half full.

Live and learn. :P

I also do not trust the fuel gage in my 54' HH so I have a "dip stick" that slips down along side the tank and the side sheet metal. Because the fill neck on the HH is straight into the tank a straight "dip stick" works great. You can even check fuel level while still sitting in the drivers seat. I have marked the stick with half and full marks.
One more thing, MTS plastic tank guy in Dubuqe Iowa has a fuel tank cap that has a check valve in the cap to prevent fuel leaking out of the fill neck when jeep is in a off camber position.

Before my resto... I used the parking brake handle (which was pulled completely out) as my "gas dip stick". I kept it wedged in next to the tank and body and too could check the fuel level right from the drivers seat! :D :D

Chet so what your saying is your gauge is working now? I use the dowel dipstick method.

I've used it foe so long not sure i could trust a sending unit anymore..... but it gives me hope

My dad found out that when the fuel gauge reads 1/4 full, that actually means empty. We had to go pick him up off of the side of the road. Another thing that works well to gauge fuel level is a wooden broomstick.
