Can anyone tell me if my rear axle has 10 or 19 splines?

If your 44 is the orignal in your 53, it is a 10-spline.

how difficult is it to change from 10 spline to 19 spline.

you'll need 2 new axle shafts, and 2 syder gears/ side gears to match the new spline count. as for the taper of the shafts, i don't know that. they might be the same.

normaly the more splines the on the shaft the larger the shaft becomes. like a ford 9" shaft 28 spline is 1/8 smaller then a 31 spline shaft for the same make. unless the splines become smaller. but the 10 spline shafts i'm sure would have room to resplined to a larger count with out changing size.
