Looking for a few suggestions from some of you veteran 3B'ers. About a month ago I bought a complete rolling '53 3B chassis with engine, running gear, and a few body parts (hood, grille) for $150. I wanted a complete Jeep but this was all I could find. I thought it would make a good 'builder' chassis or at the least a good parts Jeep in case I found a better 3B later on. Since then I haven't found anything that looks better than what I have, so I've begun tearing it down for an eventual rebuild. My first question is in regards to what I should expect for 'typical' frame rust. I know guys out in the western and southern states don't have to worry as much about this, but here in Michigan they dump 10 tons of salt every time a meteorologist thinks he smells snow. That being the case, I've got a little rust here. Haven't figured out how to post pictures yet, so it'll just have to be a description for now. The rot through is under the front axle snubbers on the frame, and more on the boxed sections that extend backwards from the front crossmember to the area near the steering box. 99% of it seems to be localized to the boxing plates only. I am an experienced welder/fabricator, so fixing them won't be a problem. Also, my rear crossmember was rotted beyond repair, so that had to be cut out as well. I guess my question at this point is, do you guys think I would be better off looking for a nicer frame? Or is this kind of thing to be expected? I've never had an old Jeep before so I don't really know. Any opinions would be very much appreciated. Thanks! -Marc. |

Hello Marc, Personally, I would rebuild the frame you have. In our part of the world (I'm in Ontario), the chances of finding a better one are pretty small. Also, you have the skills needed to do the job. From what you describe, your frame isn't too badly damaged and it's a straight-forward repair. There's my two cents! Regards, Gary |

Marc, I have a good 3b frame and other parts that I would give you if you want to come down to North Carolina and get them. Paul |
