i own a '63 cj-3b and lately there has been a squeak in the area of the speedometer; it appears to be the speedometer/insturment cluster but i'm not sure. as the needle on the speedometer jumps back and forth, it squeaks. the sound is driving me crazy when i drive b/c it is highly annoying. any ideas? |

greenjeep, I had the same issue several years ago. After I lubed the cable (remove cable housing top and bottom, separate internal cable from housing, soak both parts in kerosene or WD40, dry both well with rag, mix graphite and axle grease in palm of hand, lube cable well in greased palm, insert into housing)... I still had the problem. I removed the instrument and lubed the part of the gauge with WD40 where the cable screws on. Reinstalled the gauge. Never another problem. |

when i pulled my eng i think my issue is i pinched the conduit putting it back in so might need new inside cable i like Pete's advice - am sure mine hasnt been done in 50 yrs if your still squeking and removing the (big) speedo read up on how it grounds etc first, cause if you get it wrong it will smoke your Fuel/Temp |

I replaced my cable to eliminate my jumping needle and put a drop of light machine oil on the bushing on the back of the speedo housing the square cable goes into. It nice and smooth now. |

Here's one for $15, at that price it's better just to replace it, in my opinion. If you decide to "lube" yours use powered graphite, remove the cable from housing, clean, pour some graphite into housing and insert the old cable, if theres no damage or frayed strands of cable or the housing isn't damaged, not to likely on an old jeep again my $.02 http://walcks4wd.com/speedometer-cable-with-housing.html |

where the cable plug into the odometer ,there is a small hole on top where you can put some wd40 to clean it and than some clean lube oil that should stop the sweaking sound, if not the cable should be change |
