The Starter on my 1960 CJ-5 does not always engage. It will spin, but not engage the fly wheel. It will do this once or twice before engaging and starting the Jeep. This Jeep has become my daily driver so I want to get this fixed before it becomes a huge problem. Someone suggested it could be a ground problem???? I have a starter for my CJ3B project but I don't want to start stealing parts from the 3B for the 5. Any help would be appreciated. Josh |

If the starter motor is turning yet not engaging you most likely need a new starter Bendix. It's also possible that the flywheel ring gear has a few teeth that are worn down. |

It would be worth removing the starter and checking the ring gear and Bendix gear of course. However, it might just be the Bendix needing a good clean up as dust from the clutch will sometimes build up and prevent the Bendix gear moving fully into mesh with the ring gear. Wash in petrol but don't oil it afterwards as the dust will stick to the oil. A quick spray with WD 40 would probably be OK. Worth a try anyway. Bob. |
