Maximum wear on break drums?

Just started to sandblast the drums and sudenly realized they are a bit worn.

Whats the maximum the can be (before machining)?
Do you measure or is there a visual clue?

MEASURED!!

Standard brake drums are 9" and have the maximum diameter stamped on the drum. The manual (you have one, right??) states .060" maximum oversize (look for 9.060" on drum).

Any reputable shop you take your drums to should measure them prior to turning. If they are already too close to the limit they should refuse to turn them. Hopefully, you can get a new set locally.

The danger of having drums exceed the maximum diameter is they become too thin and cannot hold up to braking duty. Drum failure would ruin your day real quickly (not to mention other people who assume you are performing required maintenance correctly).

Thanks Rus, I brought them to a brake specialist who said they werent that bad at all! should be ready by Friday which is good news cause thats when my frame will be dry and I can start assembling....

Oh, still need to sandblast and paint the backing plates and drums first off course:)
