Thoughts on Ignition Upgrade?; Looking to make the change

I have a 63' 3B that I am changing items to make it run better and easier to work on. I have read the section about Ignition Upgrades and am wondering who has done this and what results they have had.

Anyone who has gone to a Pointless ignition or upgraded their coil, please chime in. I want as many opinions and options as possible before making my decision.

Thanks for all of your help.

Hi Nick,

Those electronic Pick up Coils in the distributor are pretty neat, "Modernizes" the old Jeep,

less hassle and either the work or they dont,

But I have changed out newer distributors for customers and installed the old school points,

So it goes both ways, The retired Air Force fellow with this newer Jeep wanted his newer rig to run just in case they dropped a Electro Magnetic pulse bomb,

Frank,

Any suggestions?

Well,

Personally I like the points, although they require attention from time to time,

Thing is if you keep that old Jeep the way it is, come hell or high water you can pour something that resembles gas in the tank, push start it with a dead battery and get going,

Cant do that with a new rig,

I think my 64 CJ3-B ran much better with the Pertronix (it may have been compensating for the incorrect carburetor), but the unit failed suddenly and almost left me stranded. :( I'm back to the point set up.

I ran my 74 with Pertrontixs Ignitor in her for 8 or 9 years & only have one complant ..There coil is called flame thrower they should have named it Hellfire,, It broke the bones in my right hand between the knuckles & the wrist .. I had a lifter go bad & I grabbed the coil wire to shut it off & for some reason my hand hit the hood real hard,,, I would put 50 miles a day on it .. 5 days a week,, at High way speeds 65 to 70,, never let me down... reason Im not useing it on my 360 is HEI I can shove 70 thousand volts though it,, Pertrontixs Ignitor was only 40 thousand,,,
I will have a kill switch on the fire wall,, I never run high test in any of my jeeps ether & The last 360 I built got 28 miles to the gal.. Cant do that with a 60 year old Willys motor,, & I can push mine & pop the clutch out & fire it right up..I live on the side of a Mtn & very seldom use the starter,, I still can walk into a Auto Zone & get parts for her,,, I dont care for new rigs ether,, This 3b Im putting on my CJ-5 frame will be the first pretty Jeep Ive ever owned & Ive been in them since diapers,,

Sometimes you have to upgrade what you brung to get it back home,,,

Would anyone recommend just upgrading the coil?

I installed the pertronix in our 54' HH 7 yrs. ago and have not had to touch the ignition since. I have converted from 6V to 12 V and left the 6V starter on the 134 cuin F-head and it only takes 1/2 a turn of the starter to start the little four banger. It still has the single barrel "CARTER" carb. on it and it runs at all of the high elevations I have taken it to.
I would recomend the 'Pertronics' electronic ignition for the distributor with coil, plugs and new wires.

The little engine will thank you for it.
