Was checking my newly acquired Yellow '56 DJ3A front end today (56337-10488) and took the wheels off. To my surprise, the drivers side wheel nuts came off like regular bolts do. On all my 4X4 Willys the drivers side is Left Hand Threads, or in other words, they tighten as the wheel turns forward. Does anyone know if all DJ's are like that? Or has someone changed the studs? |

The unknown year axle set from Ohio that I put on my 1956 has left hand thread studs front and rear on the drivers side. There was a huge pile of assorted parts in that lot but the only identifiers that may or may not have suggested a year was a complete set of 5 Surrey hubcaps and the loose engine which still had the old down draft breather tube instead of a PVC valve. I've got the engine number but I don't know how to relate it to a year. My 1963 also has left hand thread studs front and rear on the drivers side. One of the front hubs off of my original 1956 axle has been temporarily misplaced and its going to take some more searching to find it. It's out there somewhere but until I do find it I can't be absolutely sure yet. I can't compare the rear axle because that was a WRONG pinto axle on my 1956 until I replaced it. The left hand studs themselves that are all on the drivers side are stamped L. Only guessing at this point but they don't appear to be swedged in as tight or in the same manner as the studs on the 4 wheel drive jeeps. To me at a pretty good glance they look similar to a more modern type stud that can be knocked or pressed in and out of the hub without swedging. The Reason for the left hand threads to begin with was to help keep the lugs tight considering and in conjunction with the rotation of the wheel. Heavy duty idea on the 4 wheel drives and with only 4 lugs and a big 15 inch wheel on the DJ's this would likely have been done as an additional safety feature to keep wheels from coming loose and pealing off going down the road. Not being a engineer I couldn't begin to calculate how important these left hand lugs are in the real world. Charles |
