The official top 10 ON-ROAD upgrades for a standard CJ-3B. I have a top 10 list...so what's on your list ? These are strictly intended to make the 3B more road worthy. 1] WARN 25% O.D. (not used if #3 re-geared ) 2] Borg Warner T15 transmission (HD with sychronized 1st gear) 3] Re-gear with D20 transfer case and centered flanged D44 with 4.09 final drive ratio. (eliminates #1 Warn O.D.) 4] Split bore master cylinder plus disk brakes or 11" Bendix brakes or 10" Wagner brakes. 5] Manual Saginaw steering 6] Street tires 7] Larger engine and clutch (D225 with 10.4 Borg Beck or GM 153 with 9-1/4 Auburn) 8] D30 front axle assembly 9] Softer leaf springs 10] Dual fuel tanks |

If swapping to a Dana 30, I vote for a set of 72-75 axles with 11" brakes and 4.27 gears with a t-14 and a 20 transfer case. If still trying to keep somewhat stock and off-roadable then keep original gears and go with the Warn overdrive. The overdrive is 100% reversible if you want to go back to stock. Buick v6 with a manual or auto is a big plus for road cruising. Electric wipers, heater, and a top if driving all seasons. |

I would suggest the Chevy Vortec 4.3L V6 with fuel injection rather than the Buick 225. The Buick parts are getting somewhat pricey, compared to the more plentiful Chevy, and harder to find. Just my .02, Sam Michael Jr, Jax, FL |

Make long story short.. 1- Drop CJ-3b body onto a 74 Cj-5 frame..makeing it fit the wheel base with a saws all.. Big hammer,, plus's it gives room to fit a big boy in a 3b.. 2- Add one fresh 80s AMC 360 thats used to running on a 2 barrel.. 3- Add one 650 CFM HOLLEY SPREAD BORE CARBURETOR .. Mechanical linkage..jet accordingly... 4- 373 gears. 11" brakes.. seat belts & roll gage.. 22gal tank... 5- Shack don't stir & take off the secondairy linkage & motor down the road at 28MPG at highway speeds,, And when you want to play just hook the linage back up for 11MPG & when its in Granny its 5.5 MPG.. With todays gas prices the only 4 wheelers that are going to do any road work has got to get gass milage too,,

I kinda have to agree with Hoghead, at the point of doing all these upgrades his idea is easier. In a sick sort of way. LOL. Some of these are upgrades that still retain the idea of the 3B. Brakes are a non visible upgrade with a big improvement in safety. And the OD is in the same relm of originality. But beyond that you are getting into the area of upgrading to a hardcore off road type Jeep. |
