The official top 10 OFF-ROAD upgrades for a standard CJ-3B. I have a top 10 list...so what's on your list ? These are strickty intended to increase off road capability. 1] Powr Lok for D44 rear axle 2] Powr Lok for front axle 3] Borg Warner T98 four speed or T90C (with 3.34 first ratio) (lower gears also provide increased engine braking) 4] Re-gear with Tera low 3.15 reduction transfer case also install 5.38 gears if jeep has 4.27 final drive ratio. 5] Split bore master cylinder plus disk brakes or 11" vented Bendix brakes or 10" vented Wagner brakes or 9" vented Bendix brakes. 6] Power Saginaw or manual saginaw (I prefer increased dependability of manual) 7] Off road tires 8] D30 front axle for tighter turning radius also allows wider tires than D25/D27 9] Warn 8274 or Braden PTO or Koenig PTO or Ramsey PTO winches 10] Warn 25% O.D. (allows greater versatility... engine rpm vs. travel speed) |

seat belts / shoulder harnesses fire extinguisher battery quick disconnect roll cage high traction competition ash tray I'd also nix the overdrive if one was going to go for improving off road performance. And as far as the high traction competition ash tray -- perhaps we could get around off road without it... J |

what i plan to do/have done, and in the process of. first, before i do anything i am upgrading to disk brakes because the school season is upon us i feel it important to be able to stop as fast as humanly possible if a school kid were to jump out in front of me, or a pet or even a deer. as i type this i have a pair of good/very rusty international scout rotors submerged in the works toilet bowl cleaner. they are so rusty i would be embarrassed to take them to the parts store to be turned. after about an hour i will pull them out and they will be bare metal. second i have changed my ten spline dana 41 axles to 19 spline dana 44 axles. i broke the ten spline and i was not even off the pavement. third i have a dauntless 225 ready to be stuffed under the high hood, this will help keep up with the other jeeps both on the trails, and to the trails. i love my little f head, but i plan to make a camping trailer out of a bantam eventually and i am going to need just a little more power fourth i plan to aquire a sm 465 three speed with granny to put behind the 225 this will give me a decent crawl ratio 1st 6.55 tcase 2.46 dana 41 5.38 crawl ratio= 87 at least that is what novac's crawl ratio calculator says. i have a ten spline planetary gear set for my warn od so i should be able to keep my od. 5th i plan to put a manual saginaw steering box on. i like to stay manual because if i were to lose the engine going down hill i will still have good steering and brakes. 6th i found my self drooling over a 4wheel drive hardware catalog one day and i came across warn's new winch that doubles as a air compressor. i can't remember what they called it, but it looked neat. 7th tires, i am still undecided on these i want something that will clean out good, but since it is my daily driver i will have to get good mileage out of them because they are so darn expensive. 8th lockers i plan to go with a lock rite in the rear 9th in the front i want a cable type locker 10th electric fan, and lots of waterproofing because when the fan hits the water, well we all know the horrible noise. with the electric on i will be able to turn it off for deep water crossings. so that's my top ten, i look forward to seeing others it may give me more ideas

Ken have you come over to the darkside? Your list is pretty complete. I also vote for the rollbar, 8274 or at least a 5687 if going for the nostalgia look. Front bumper with recovery points and tow bar mounts to go with the winch. Rear bumper with spare tire carrier(to replace the stock side mount) and gerry can mount. |

I think the 4.3L V6 Chevy Vortec engine with fuel injection is a better choice off-road due to the varied angles you would encounter on the trail. The carburetors can easily flood in certain positions while crawling and cause the engine to die. A larger fuel tank or dual tanks would be mandatory. Just my .02, Sam Michael Jr, Jax, FL |

Don't forget the Lockright lockers in both axles. Remove the interlock pill in the Dana 18 TC to allow easier turning with lockright in front axle. (2WDLO) |

Let's see. 6.39x3.15x4.27=86:1. Yep, that will work even with squirrels under the hood. The T90C is not quite as attractive at 45:1 and I would be going with 4.88 gears if using that. And yes, the OD will enhance off-road performance by letting you split all the gears. Using it with the TeraLow's gets you back almost to the same reduction as the stock T case gears. I too would be adding a bar or cage and harness but you certainly have the rest right. |
