Rus, I do have a mat but its more for my dogs comfort and grip than protecting the paint.
The "run" is a simple rope I tied between the rollbar columns and attached a carabiner to.

That a great setup, nice way to secure your best friend
I did the same type of dog run in my Cj7. The roll cage goes to the floor behind the seats so the rope was a lot lower. I put two knots about 12 inches apart offset from center and used a ring to slide back and forth so Tasha could go side to side. The rope being so low allowed Tasha to stand on the center console and pull upward against the tie downs, this gave her a lot of stability from bumps. On the road going around curves I found her leaning into the curve, it was fun to see. On the trail the amount of security she felt atop the console left her at my side all day. More people outside of our club knew Tasha’s name before mine.
