I am trying to replace the alternator that was put on by the PO. I checked with NAPA and it is one that was supposed to be on 70-80's GM vehicles. There's not a 12V alternator for that year (obviously 6 V). Would the one's listed for the later model 2.2 134's work? If so, or if not, Does anyone know a part Number? Do I also need a voltage Regulator?

Please fill in your "signature with known information about your Jeep !

CJ's began using alternators as early as 1962.

jrod,
As I read your post, I understand you're asking for a 12V alternator. But different than the one you have on from PO. Right? I can't help but ask, if you want another alternator, what's really wrong with the one you have?

I get lost when you mention that after checking with NAPA for 70-80 GM vehicles all those alternators are 6V. This isn't true. Either you and the store weren't communicating well or I don't understand what you're trying to tell us.

Anyways, there is a lot of information here on alternators. Which one to buy, ensuring your regulator (usually inside the alternator) is the type that will excite at your rpms, how to set it up, etc. Many members here have alternators.

Recommend learn what works first, then decide.

I really think you'll be able to collect the needed info. Ensure you have a good bracket. Ensure you have the correct pulley for the wide belt. Ensure you're wiring harness works correctly.

I'd recommend a two wire alternator. One for exciting the generator and one to charge the battery. It's a typical GM style setup.

I'd recommend having the shop set the excitation level to a lower rpm setup so that for low rpm's it charges the battery.

The advantage here is that one can use an amperage gauge and/or the idiot light on the dash (assuming you have a single unit cluster).

Now, that isn't a "pure" restoration solution, but it is unlikely that you have a candidate for a high point pristine restoration, and, frankly, it isn't worth it to even attempt one unless one has a pristine, untouched jeep to start with, OR an unlimited supply of cash.

good luck

It's just my luck that something good is going to happen to me today.

Any of the gm one wire or two wire alternators will work. Best choice depends on what gage package you have, the single gage works best with the GM two wire, as stated above, one for the self excite circuit, the other for the idiot light. If you have the multi gage dash, a one wire will work just fine. Most GM cars of the late 60s early 70s had a delco 63 amp alternator. This will work fine on your jeep and pretty much have twice the power you need.

Look on line, you can buy these things for $50-$70. If you're lucky, you can use whatever mount you have on there right now.

As stated above, see if a local auto electric shop can set it up to excite at a lower RPM. The one I had on mine would excite at 700 rpm or so.

Somewhere on here I posted a write up with photos of my one wire setup deco/remy alternator on my 54 3b. Its been on the jeep for near 15 yrs i got it out of a junkyard from an 80's chevy pickup. Ive had it rebuilt once and its still going. I also use a ballast resister for my points.

Thank you for the replys and information.
I apologize if I was unclear on my original question. The PO put an alternator on but it looks as tho they used whichever one was available"to make it work" as a 12V system, verses getting the correct one for the jeep . The alternator does not fit on the bracket to line up with the fan belt. On the bracket the belt is at an angle. I looked into moving the screw and changing the bracket. Also the belt does not fit in the channel on the alternator correctly, but is the correct belt for the channel on the fan.

This could be from the "make part fit, uungah, uungah" designs that I'm correcting from the PO. Such as the email response of " No I don't have the missing oil filter or cannister, those things didn't come with one"

I gave NAPA the part number (Delco Remy 1103197) off of the alternator. And that is what the guy at the store, gave me as the 70-80's GM alternator.

My mindset was, before going thru all of the moving parts around to make the alternator fit, why not see if I have the wrong size alternator.

Also about my new ness, sorry again. Oldtime you said to put up known info about the jeep in my signature, gladly.... Could someone tell me how to,please?
