recently i have noticed that if the f head is just a slight bit low on oil ( about 3 lines on the dipstick) my oil pressure gauge bounces, and in really hard right hand turns temporarily goes to 0 ! i am wondering if this has something to do with the design of the oil pan, or if maybe there is something wrong with my oil pump or pickup tube. i can make left hand turns as fast as i want and the pressure is not effected even slightly, the same goes for stopping quickly. has anyone noticed any of these symptoms with their jeep? the little f head runs like a swiss watch, i would be heart broken if something happened to it. any ideas would be greatly appreciated

If the oil press. gauge is electric, check wiring. |

This seems odd. The Oil Float is centered in the oil pan and has the ability to pivot slightly on its stem. I am having difficulty in visualizing how you'd loose pressure unless the Float actually cavitates. That would suggest the oil level was low. When you change oil, does the dip stick show "Full" or somewhere lower? |

Very occasionally I have see oil floats that do not pivot up and down properly. Also be sure that your oil level indicator reads correct: http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/Tech/OilDipstick.html |

i do believe the dipstick is reading true, mine is the early production as indicated by the chart. going by the chart (the dipstick above) the oil pressure really seems to act up the most at add 1qt, but that is the lowest i have let it get. i am seriously thinking about removing the oil pan to see what there is to see. while i am in there i would like to replace the rear main seal, that is where my oil leak is, but after reading about the horror stories with the new rear main seals i have been hesitant. is the neoprene seal from kaiser usable? when i get around to pulling the pan i will take some pictures of the oil pickup, this will be the first time i will be looking at one on an f head.

Oldtime states that the oil float doesn't pivot and i had one of those and as i found out it was probably made for a welder or other stationary equipment.... that would be my guess as to your problem George |

No, I did not mean to imply a stationary type of oil pickup. I meant a normal pickup float assembly that tends to bind and not pivot up and down as it should. |
