As I'm sure many here do, I have a daily look at ewillys.com and I am always seeing more CJ3b's from 1953 than any other year.

If it's as simple as that's the year they made the most, then why is that?

Just curious.

According to the production figures more 3B's were built in 1953 and 1954 than at any other time.
I'm convinced that the CJ-5 had a lot to do with the CJ-3B production decline after 1954.

OT, I believe you are right. But I still can't imagine anyone thinking a CJ5 is cooler than a Flat fender Jeep! And especially a CJ3B! Don't get me wrong, I enjoy any Jeep built up to about 1986. Then they basicly turned into 4 wheel drive cars. But none have the class and style of the flatties!

The CJ5 just has a lot more amenties than the 3B-actual defrost system without hoses, a heater that actually worked, body rail that seals a soft top much better, and about a foot wider at the dash/engine bay. And most people probably would find the esthetics of the body style of the CJ5 more desirable. The CJ5 was without doubt the cause of lower 3B production numbers after 1954. What I find more interesting is why Willys kept the 3B in production at all after the debut of the 5. Must have been some money to be made from it even with the low production numbers.

But then I have yet to figure out how Kaiser actually sold F heads after offering the 225 option either. That, IMO, was an even bigger gap than the 3B/CJ5 body difference.

I have convinced myself that the CJ-3B was dropped specifically to promote the Dauntless for the CJ-5 , CJ-6.
In other words the 3B ended it's US manufacture in order to promote the D-225.
Otherwise it's a huge coincidence that the 3B was dropped from U.S. production in early 1965 and the Dauntless was available by late 1965.

Here's the mathmatical formula ... CJ-3B = D-225 = 1965
