Does anyone know how to tell the difference between D25 and D27 powr Loks?

I've read some where that a D27 powr lok can be used in a D25 with some type of adapter.

Pictures would also help.

As you know the easiest way is to identify via the Dana Spicer (DS) part number that's stamped into the case.
Known D25 Powr Lok assembly = 23321X series 4 (marked STD)
Known D27 Powr Lok assembly = 22477X series 4 (marked STD)

Even the date stamping could be a give-away since the D25 Powr Lok predates the D27 Powr Lok by a couple of years.

If present the ring gear O.D or I.D. can be used to identify D25 or D27.
The D25 has a 7-11/16" diameter ring gear. (O.D.)
The D27 has a 7-1/16" diameter ring gear. (O.D.)
The D25 ring I.D. = approximately 4.260
The D27 ring I.D. = approximately 4.125

If present the carrier cone rollers and the bearing cups can be used to identify D25 or D27.
The D25 has larger differential case bearings.

D25 cone and roller = 24780
D25 bearing cup = 24721
D27 cone and roller = LM 50311
D27 bearing cup = LM XXXXX

The D27 can accept higher gear ratios because the ring gear is offset more. Approximately 1/8".
This implies that a spacer of approximately 1/8" can be used to push the ring closer to the pinion.
By doing this you will esentially be creating what's called a thick gear.
Thick gears are non standard.

In general .......
The common 5.38 gear ratio uses a relatively thick ring gear along with a small diameter pinion.
The 4.88 ring gear or higher gears will not be as thick and the pinion diamter will increase.

Got that ?
