Speedo from a '59 dash. Hook variable speed drill to transmission end of speedo cable. Run drill to get 30 mph indicated on speedo. Keep it running steady. After part of a minute, the speedo needle begins to go lower (slower) on the dial - then jumps back to correct speed for a little - then slows down again - and then jumps back up to speed - etc - you get the picture. All the while the drill is at constant speed. Speedo cable is good - no noisiness - no jerkiness - no jitter. Is this easily fixable or is it broke? Will it need a complete rebuild by one of the speedo experts out there? I'd really like to fix it as a replacement looks to be around $100. Thanks. |

You might be able to pull the cable out from inside the housing, clean it and lubricate it with grafite and slip it back in. Or, I think you can buy just the speedometer cable. |

Make sure you lubricate the brass speedometer bushing that the cable end inserts into. That bushing is the most common source of friction. |
