I’m the new owner of a mostly stock, mechanically restored ’54 3B. I haven’t been this nervous since I was driving my wife to the delivery room. The previous owner knows his stuff, so I’m pretty confident that it will in the best condition one could hope for. What do I need to know to keep it that way? I’ve been reading the bulletin board for the last few months, and have checked out the tech tips, but I’d appreciate any advice you guys can offer for a new owner. I’m placing an order for a shop manual. What else do I need to buy right away? |

Really glad to hear you found a 3B. Perhaps the best advice is simply to enjoy it without putting too much work into it. If you get it looking too nice then you'll never be able to really have fun for fear of paint scrapes and scratches. Post pics when you can..... |

First of all, congratulations. Did you find your prize on the island? I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine. Some pictures would be nice. As for what to do. Service it. Go through anything that needs a fluid or grease. Even if the pervious owner said I just did,,,,. It's now your job to make sure it was done and done properly. Here is a link to the service check-chart. Hollar if there are any questions. http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/Tech/ChekChart.html Check the fluids in the axles, transmissions and the transfder case for water. Remember that water is heavier than oil so you'll need to sample these fluids from the bottom. (but really, best deal as a new owner is to replace all your fluids) Put a fuel filter between the fuel tank and the fuel pump. This is just my starting point. OK folks, lets add to the list for him. |

Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything on island, or even west coast. It's killing me how much I'm spending on shipping, but being able to trust the PO (Bill Reiss) was worth it.

I've found that the things most old Jeep owners fail to grease and thus are badly worn are: spring shackles (outer ends) spring pivot bolts (inner ends) brake and clutch pedal pivots rear wheel bearings (don't forget to open the grease relief hole first or you'll pump grease past the seal into your brake drums) drive shaft U joints drive shaft slip splines (or whatever you call 'em) That's what I can think of off the top of my head. Get a tube (or two) of Mobil One and go to town.

That certainly is a nice looking 3b. Since you already have a shop manual on order I'd recommend a parts list. In my never-too-humble opinion the 1967 parts manual is the best one to have for the older jeeps. It would cover cj5/6/5a/6a/dj, and of course the cj3b. It'll help you see what parts are directly interchangeable between the models, give you a handle on whether that part you find in a swap meet will fit your jeep, give you dimensions and thread patterns for screws, and the number of pieces used per vehicle. It also contains pictures that help show how things go together. The reason I like the '67 manual is that it is the last one that has an index by part number -- the 1970 and 1971 manuals were configured differently and that index went away. j |

It's just my luck that something good is going to happen to me today. 54 - 3B - down on the farm 67 - cj6 - former state of Alabama vehicle ?? - cj5 T98a - made from spare parts - Ford tractor blue ?? - cj5 T98a - made from spare parts - Jeep green | |

I'm certainly impressed with your new toy, however there are several items missing ............. more photos (from all sides and engine room)! Just messing with you of course, but please do post more photos of the beauty when you get a chance as most of us here on the board sincerely enjoy drooling over another owner's 3B. |

jyotin, do you know where a '67 parts manual is available? It looks like the '71 is in reprint. |

Ken (oldtime) just posted a list of all the grease zerks on an older 3B: http://z4.invisionfree.com/CJ3B_Bulletin_B...?showtopic=4401 There were a couple I didn't know about. Great info as usual, from Ken. If you have a newer 3B with the H shackles (Silent Shackles) you lose 8 zerks so you only have 22 to grease. Everybody get out your grease guns.

Good note on the grease fittings. Going through the service checks, can someone explain where the 1000 mile service internal comes from? Is this based on older motor oil formulations or are these old jeeps more sensitive to wear? |
