Many years ago, I was driving thru Montana at high speed in a Renault Turbo, when I noticed the coolant temperature started climbing higher and higher. Stopped in a little village to do something about it. A small moulded hose cracked close to the head. Removed a rubber hose from an old Ford truck on a farm. The local guys told me it is OK, nobody needs it anymore. Temporarily the Renault was repaired. BUT, there was a CJ-3B sitting on three legs in this village. Took some pictures of the jeep, just found the 6x6 negative and scanned it. May belong to one of you here on the forum. Montana licence plate #: 51-6117A. The owner must have been a comfort loving guy, there is a large sofa in the back. May have been restored since and winning shows or...? ![]() ![]()

The "51" plate is Jefferson County and with the background scenery, I'm going to guess the village is probably Boulder on I15. Once found a dually FC 170 there but didn't have time to look at it. Went back later and never could locate it again. My Jeep buddy lives over the hill in Clancy. |

And, I don't think it was really abandoned when that photo was taken. Axle problem yes, but with sleeping bag in the rear seat, obviously still in use. Lots of old mines/mining roads in that vicinity, including the ghost town of Elkhorn-perfect for an old Jeep. |

Interesting that the back of the windshield is pink. Looks like the guy was having a bad day and lost a wheel bearing.. That back seat is something else..lol. |

Duffer, sounds like your jeepin buddy could be Steve and Deidra from Clancy. I have jeeped with them in Boulder and also they have come over to the PNW4WDA trail Jamboree in the Cascades off of hiway 410 in Washington. We have done the Montana Divide Ride a number of times and in different towns. We did the Boulder runs twice once in 2004 and I can't remember the other year, but after 2004. Dick W. Spokane Wa. |
