Rear axle seals

This might be a stupid question, but which direction are the oil seals in the rear axle supposed to be? I pulled everything off my axle and found the seal facing the inside?? Meaning; if there was pressure in the oil from the pumpkin, it would be sealing against that. But, isn't there more pressure from the bearing grease; at least when one is adding grease? So which way is correct? The parts book and service manual are no help.

The real axle assembly has 2 different seals that are near the wheel bearing.

The axle shaft seal goes between the shaft and the outer tube of the housing.
It seals the carrier oil from leaking outward.
See part # 33: http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Photos/Parts/RearAxle.JPG

There is also an outer grease retainter which goes between the hub and the outer flange.
This seal keeps contamination away from the wheel bearing.

In general seals are always positioned so that the lip is inward toward the lubricant.
The seal "lip" is often but not always bound with a spring garter band.

Thanks,

I understand the concept, it just seems that the this is a special case (with lubricant on both sides of the oil seal.) it make sense, but if the relief hole on top of the axle tube is plugged, and one doesn't know about it, this would allow grease to be pumped into the axle tube right?

Thanks again for the response.

Excess grease / oil always goes into the outer "grease retainer" (part # 8)
