A friend bought a jeep frame and installed a body he built. He thinks the frame was from a CJ5. The frame has this piece attached to the front axle passenger side going toward the rear of the frame. http://s577.beta.photobucket.com/user/Dont...ary/Dave%20jeep Does anyone know what it is for? Thanks, Don Southeast, NC 53 CJ3B |

It is an axle from a jeep with a V6 engine. That was sort of an additional "snubber" used in the V6 jeeps j |

i agree, i believe its purpose was to keep the oil filter on the d225 from being crushed when the suspension is at full bump. |

I think that particular D27 snubber design was limited to 1971 and possibly 1970. |

My 1968 CJ-5 with 225 cuin V-6 has the torgue snubber on the right side of the front axle ( dana 27 ) it is out board of the spring and has a stop riveted to the outboard side of the frame. The torque arm has a rubber snubber bolted to it's top side. I believe this was in facrt to stop the front axle from hitting the oil filter on the V-6 produced jeeps. It is welded to the axle so I would think it was a factory design when the V-6's were introduced in 1965 in the CJ-5's. It is not on the CJ-3B axles. Dick W. Spokane Wa. |

Thanks for the replies. It turns out it is a travel stop (not proper term) to protect either the oil filter or maybe the oil pan on some vehicles with the V-6 installed. I even got a couple of pictures from Marty that made it very clear. I posted it in the file with my first two pictures. http://s577.beta.photobucket.com/user/Dont...ary/Dave%20jeep Anyway, I have my answer. THANKS ALL !!!! Don Southeast, NC 53 CJ3B |

Nice picture of the snubber. That is the first one I have ever seen that didn't have the end broken off ---- |

As a follow up to clear any question in my mind, Wes copied and sent me a few pages from a Jeepster Series Service Manual. In the FRONT AXLE chapter was this info about my question. "On V-6 engine equipped vehicles, a U-bracket is welded on the right rear side of the axle housing protruding rearward, and mounts a rubber bumper. This torque reaction bumper eliminates axle interference with the engine oil pan on sudden stops of the vehicle by the bumper striking a bracket riveted to the outside of the right front frame channel." |
