Hoghead, I have done two saginaw steering conversions, one on my 1968 CJ-5 and the other on the 54 CJ-3B. Both are manual steering boxes from the late 60's and early 70's Chevrolets.
This conversion elimiates all of the clap trap joints that the 'Ross' original steering system had on the early jeeps. The bell crank on the front cross member to the dual tie rods and the drag link from the Ross boss box to the bell crank.
The new Saginaw mounting part is great. I did not have that available when I did the Saginaw conversions, but I have a solid mounting plate welded to the left frame horn and boxing of the frame horns foward of the cross member in my jeeps.
The steering has greatly improved and I think it is some thing everybody that trail rides their CJ-3B should consider. With the F-head though, I don't think that power steering conversion is a neccesity, besides finding a pump and other parts to put power steering on a 4-banger can be a challenge and is robbing your 75 HP that you need for other times.
There are a number of aftermarket Co's now that offer the mounting bracket and steering box to make the conversion like your picture shows. A tilt steering wheell conversion helps too.

Too bad wrecking yards are a thing of the past. It takes a little effort to make this conversion, but in my opinion it is well worth it, but only if you are not dead set on keeping the HH original.

I put this up because I couldn't find the post that someone was asking about the Saginaw conversions,,, Figuered it would be easier for them to find me ,,, The seach on here & I just don't get along...

My 3b will be sitting on a 74 CJ-5 frame with a Saginaw manual steering box... & as the V8 going in it could handle the power steering pull on it .. I figure I drove the 74 for 18 years with out power figured I didnt need it yet :) ,,

I was just checking though some sights that I havent been to in awile & saw the kit figured I'd post it ,, I had read on here before than someone was thinking about it ,,, Once in awile I have a brain fart & figured I'd just toss it out there,,,

Your right about when you start with 75HP you dont realy want to take any away,, butt the post I saw the gentleman was having a hard time turning his Ross box & was thinking of power...

Im using a older S-10 tilt steering wheel conversion on mine,,

A lot of info on Saggy's over at Early CJ5. It is not a big deal to fabricate your own mounting if you have some basic metal working tools. No custom pices were purchased for my 3B conversion and, at this point, I think it has passed the test of time-been on there for 38 years without any problems.

I too think it is worthwhile if you actually use the Jeep for a lot of trail running. A power version also may save a few digits from the steering wheel and certainly makes life easier in the rocks.
