Rus: Thank you for your post. It helped, in many ways.

I'm already aware that the previous owner did not install a the heater (which isn't a stock heater) correctly, because everyone who understands anything about jeeps or vehicles has told me so. What I didn't know is precisely in how many ways he did not install the heater correctly.

I get it.

Now, as far as your shut off valve is concerned. The short answer is no, you don't NEED it. The only purpose it serves (just like a modern car temp adjustment, the blue to red slider/switch) is to close off the heater in the summer time so hot water doesn't circulate and make your toes any toastier or battle the A/C for cold air. We are talking about a jeep here and leaving it on full circulate, i.e. the non-shut off hose fitting you have, won't pose a measureable amount of discomfort here. The added benefit is your heater core is always being circulated so it won't sit and rust. And it will make the flush process one step shorter as the heater is always on "open" due to not having a shut off valve. Another benefit is mine broke 'cause I always left it open (like your straight pipe fitting) and it stuck open. Now that I have a NOS replacement, I need to remind myself to exercise it to keep it working!

I would suggest that when you have time, look for a 90* elbow to minimize stress to the hose that is attached, if you have a straight fitting. This way the hose doesn't hang on its own weight, forming a 180* bend, when connected.
