Hi Guy's, My 57 3B chewed up it's timing gear so now I am in the process of replacing it. I got the timing gear cover off and removed the 9/16 bolt in front of the gear, so now my question is do I need a puller to remove the old gear? I tried removing it by hand but it seems to be pressed on. Any help and advice would be very appreciated... Cheers, Ben (willy) |

Willy, You can search here (or Google) to see what's been said before about pulling the fiber timing gear. It's a tight fit once the bolt has been torqued on. I've tried a puller and am sure there's one designed for this but in every case, I've destroyed the gear while removing it. To me the only thing that seems to be able to take the stress of pulling/ pushing is the metal center of the gear. Any pulling/pushing on the fiber portion of the gear seems to result in excessive flexing or chipping. The last time I did this, it seems I used large screw drivers and chisels as wedges between the front plate and gear. Lots of spray on the shaft and lots of "motivational language." I know people have done it, Im just not that lucky. |
