Hi guys, have any of you ever paid a shop to rebuild an original starter? I was appalled at the cost! Am i just behind the times or is $285.00 OUT OF LINE! And this was just an estimate. willow green |

Yep, the cost of rebuilding the original is way too much in my opinion. That's what made me go out and put a Toyota starter on the 134. I'm not necessarily proud of the fact but I do have a couple hundred extra bucks in my pocket

I'm like Eddie. I prefer rebuilding 'cause you know it's going to fit. However, its been a while. I do think your quoted price is a bit high. Do you not have choices to get a second or third quote? |

Well, this was the first estimate from the only auto electric shop in town that everyone says can't be beat,BUT i found a jeep mechanic that my dept. manager says, "has forgoten more about jeeps than most people still know" My manager has called on his expertise often and says no one is better. Headed to call him tonight,Wllow |

I installed my Toyota LC starter and sure does turn start up quicker, $55 bucks and an hours time. You can even wire it to your foot switch also. |

I use a local electrical rebuild shop and only pay $80.00 to have one rebuilt. I think I would shop around for another rebuilder. |

I would not be able to sleep at night knowing there was a Toyota part on my Jeep! Just wrong.

i also run a toyota starter, the toyota land cruisers have quite the tough reputation i am not ashamed to run one at all. and considering i use my jeep as a daily driver, it means i am not wearing out original jeep parts. (especially when it is 10 below and the willys needs some extra cranking) $285.00 does seem a little high, for a little more you could get a kaiser willys hi torque starter. although if that rebuilder had a good reputation, did a more thorough job, and used higher quality parts than the rest, it might be worth it. but it definitely pays to shop around. |

My guy would be around $65. He's an older guy who uses NOS parts when he can, he's very good. Where do you live? |

Prices may vary alot due to what all the rebuilder replaces during the rebuild. The person that rebuilt my generator told me that he wouldn't gaurentee the job without replacing all of the coils due to the age of the insulation. He said that the insulation can crack and short out from being disturbed during dissasembly and reassembly. So, I paid $300.00 to have the generator completely rebuilt along with a new voltage regulator to go with it. Pretty expensive "peace of mind".
