I found and bought these vintage tow hooks to install on the front of my 64 US Army CJ-3B.

By zooming in on the tow hooks pictured on the Military Police 3B
http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/Military/Massawa.html
they sure look the same, and I plan on using them.
Oldtime, can you verifiy this through your collection of manuals?

Sorry Dan,
I find no reference to any tow hooks in any of the Universal Parts Lists.
Seemingly they were never intended for any universals.
My 1973 Universal Parts Catalog also covers the early Jeepster/Commando models but it has no reference either.

Thanks oldtime for taking the time to research my question.
Maybe that particular Army unit installed the tow hooks on the CJ-3B after adding it to the motor pool.
Since the tow hooks that I found, look identical to the ones in the picture, I think it would be "historically correct", (OK) to add them.
Funny how a look into the past can raise as many questions as answers are found.

I received the tow hooks in the mail today.
The bolt hole spacing for the 1/2" holes are identical to the holes in the frame horns, and the rear holes in the hooks are tilted upward just slightly to conform with the frame surface :D
Coincidence??

They could certainly be Jeep manufactured tow hooks.
A small multitude of Jeep parts were produced that never made it into the various published parts lists.
Jeep Corporation must have kept some sort of master parts list that included absolutely every little piece that they ever used.
Example: They certainly would have had a seperate part number for each and every individual piece of a windshield weldment.

Those tow hooks look to be identical to the marine corp hooks from the MB/V35.

They still make them today, and they have a Jeep part number from the 1940's. I don't know for sure if they were used on the M606 though.

Wow, interesting!
Thanks Joe! And yes, there are part numbers on each hook, although some digits are illegible from use.
I googled CJ/V35 marine jeep, and yes, they look the same.
Were they a factory applied part used on the US Army CJ-3B under that Federal Contract, or added later by just good ole GI ingenuity and resourcefullness?
The quest goes on.

I don't have an image host so I'll have to just type the data...

as of 3-15-56, from the CJ3B BOM, group 226-244A, Specifically BOM6271, Tow hooks were an option on CJ3B.

The installation drawing was 909922

Left Hook = A-5219
Right Hook = A-5220

Supplier = Holland hitch

Available AT LEAST through 5-31-62 when they changed the group number and started listing the BOM differently.

(The numbers on your hooks are holland #'s not the Willys #'s listed above.)

This is all very interesting info about a Jeep option that I didn't know about.

So it's conceivable that jeep continued to have these as an option but dropped the original jeep part numbers around 1962?
My hooks have a #1257L and #1257R on them along with some other numbers.
The Holland Hitch website shows their hooks currently have a "TH" before the numbers.

I'm not saying they stopped using them, I just didn't take the time to check the later records. I'm busy trying to find when ( if ever) they used M606 as a separate model designation internally, for domestic use.

Can't post photos but here is the BOM page.

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data/500/m...B_Tow_Hooks.jpg

Your hooks are an authentic approved willys part, and the 1257 L and R are as specified by Willys for the holland hitch hooks.
